Saddleworth Schools Close As Teachers Strike

A banner opposing the strike outside St Mary's in Greenfield this morning.

Schools across Saddleworth have either closed entirely or partly to pupils, as teachers take part in a national strike as part of a row over public sector pensions.

This was the scene outside St Mary’s Primary in Greenfield this morning, after someone put up a banner opposing the industrial action. The picture was sent in by a Saddleworth News reader.

St Mary’s was, like most local schools, closed to pupils but open to non-striking staff. A similar arrangement was in place at Saddleworth School. Some Saddleworth primaries, including Delph, Diggle and Friezland, were open for some lessons only.

A full list of how the borough’s schools were affected is available from Oldham Council here.

Rather than go through all the arguments on both sides here, I’ll direct you to coverage elsewhere. You can find details from the Guardian here, and the Telegraph here.

Just as it the right of people to strike over their legitimate concerns, equally those who hold a different opinion have the right to work.

Are you calling people that have opposing views “pathetic” Nick - glad I didn’t vote for you.
