Debbie Abrahams Makes Maiden Speech

Debbie Abrahams MP, pictured during the by-election campaign.

Our new MP, Debbie Abrahams, has given her maiden speech in the House of Commons. During a debate this evening on the government’s plans to change the way the NHS is run, she said she feared the proposed reforms could lead to a “total privatisation” of the health service.

By convention, new MPs use their maiden speeches to say kind words about both their constituency and the MPs who have held […]

Saddleworth Winger Joins Oldham

Winger Shaun Robinson has left Saddleworth Rangers to sign for Oldham. The 21-year-old has agreed a one-year deal with the Roughyeds, as he leaves the amateur rugby league game behind.

Shaun, who works as an electrician, told Oldham’s website: “I think most Oldham lads who play rugby league would love a chance to wear the Roughyeds jersey, and I’m no exception. I can’t wait.”

He’d been with the Rangers for five years, and has battled back from a serious knee […]

Greenfield and Lydgate are the latest Saddleworth villages to be affected by the ongoing effort to improve retaining walls around our area. Work begins today on projects in both places.

In Greenfield, Chapel Road will be affected along its full distance, from its junction with Chew Valley Road right up to where it meets Oldham Road. Vehicles will be diverted via Shaw Hall Bank Road. The work is expected to last 24 weeks.

Between now and August, […]

A Drizzly Week Ahead

We’re in for more unsettled weather this week, with some regular rain showers, and the possibility of a dusting of snow on high ground on Thursday.

Today should be cloudy but dry with some sunny spells, and with temperatures a bit higher than they were over the weekend, at 5C or so.

Tomorrow and Wednesday are forecast to be mostly dull and wet with lots of drizzly rain around, although there will be periods when the cloud clears and the […]

Car Hits Tree Near Buckstones Road

A driver had to be cut free from the wreckage of his vehicle after crashing into a tree near Buckstones Road this afternoon. The incident happened on a stretch of track which leads off Buckstones Road, past Pingot Quarry, and up to Slences Farm.

According to a spokesman for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue, an emergency call was received just after 1pm. Fire engines from Oldham and Chadderton attended, along with police and the air ambulance.

Firefighters cut the man […]

Uppermill Parking Restrictions Delayed

The car park at the museum in Uppermill will have a three-hour limit.

New time limits on most car parks in Uppermill won’t be enforced for another two weeks. They were due to come into action tomorrow, but have now been put off until 14 February.

The reason for the delay wasn’t immediately clear. Although it seems likely it’s because Oldham Council had said it would give two weeks notice of the date when the restrictions would take effect, […]

Postbag: Greenfield Sweet Shop Closes

The cutting of the cake at the opening of Tesco Greenfield in December. One other local retailer certainly isn't celebrating.

There’s been a huge response both on this website and on the Saddleworth News Facebook page (which is here) to last week’s article about the closure of Julie’s Sweet Shop in Greenfield.

You can read the original article here. Julie has given up after 23 years running the business, blaming the new Tesco for taking customers away from the […]

Vehicle Stolen In Springhead

Our local police have again reminded drivers not to leave their cars unattended while defrosting them on cold mornings. A vehicle was stolen in exactly those circumstances in Springhead earlier today.

During the snow in late November and early December, at least three cars were stolen in that fashion across the borough of Oldham, including one in Diggle. Motorists have been told to stay with their cars while de-icing them, and warned that insurance companies may not pay out if […]

Civic Hall Modernisation On Schedule

Uppermill Civic Hall

Work to extend and modernise Uppermill Civic Hall is on target to be completed in May. Parish councillors were told during Monday night’s meeting, held in the building’s lower hall, that the work is currently “slightly ahead of schedule.”

The council’s clerk said the work had continued according to plan despite December’s bad weather. Cllr John Hudson praised contractor Wiggett for “working very hard to keep disruption to a minimum.”

The parish council has borrowed £500,000 […]

Iain Johnston of 20-20 Opticians recently set four balloons go to mark the 8,000th customer served by his business since it opened in 2002. Finders can go to the Uppermill shop to claim a free pair of Prada specs.

Brad, along with owner John Arthurs, […]

February’s Dobcross Diary

The new edition of the Dobcross Diary is now available to read online. If you live the village, you should be getting a paper copy through your letterbox in the next few days.

As always it’s packed with lots of useful local information and articles, as well as a handy what’s on guide, all put together by editor Michael Powis and his team of volunteers. The top story involves The Swan, which remains open for business despite fears it would […]

Labour Offers Budget Alternative

Cllr Jim McMahon: "We have listened to the people of Oldham."

The opposition Labour group on Oldham Council has revealed its alternative proposals for the authority’s budget. Labour said its plans would see proposed cuts worth £3.3m to adult social care removed, with £5.1m of separate savings identified in areas including communications and councillors’ allowances.

A total of £41m of savings must be made before the council’s budget for 2011/12 can be signed off. That consists of a widely-expected […]

Old Bell In Delph Joins Toilets Scheme

The Old Bell in Delph.

The Old Bell in Delph has become the latest premises to join Saddleworth Parish Council’s community toilets scheme. The initiative was introduced last year to help make up for a lack of public toilets in our area, and is aimed at local residents and tourists alike.

Under the scheme, participating premises allow members of the public to use their toilets for free. In return, they receive between £600 and £1,000 per year, depending on […]
