Anger Over Uppermill Parking Plans

Uppermill. It's hoped time limits on parking will help boost trade in local shops.

Concern is growing in Uppermill over plans to impose time limits on car parks in the centre of the village. The idea has been put forward by Oldham Council as a way of freeing up more parking in Uppermill for visitors and shoppers, as the high street faces competition from the impending new Tesco in Greenfield.

Nick Watts, who runs internet services, IT support and […]

Snow Affects Bin Collections And Buses

Snow-covered bins in Dobcross today.

Several inches of snow overnight has left Saddleworth fully blanketed in white for the first time this winter, and has led to disruption to local services including bin collections and buses.

Oldham Council announced this morning that all refuse collections in Saddleworth had been suspended because of the weather. A decision will be made tomorrow as to whether the collections can resume.

Meanwhile, changes have had to be made to bus routes through Saddleworth. […]

Snow Could Disrupt Bus Services

Commuters are being warned that the overnight snow could cause delays on bus services in and around Saddleworth this morning. Passengers are being advised to leave extra time for their journeys.

Michael Renshaw, the Bus and Train Director of Greater Manchester’s public transport body GMPTE said yesterday: “Greater Manchester has so far largely escaped the severe weather experienced elsewhere in England and services have been holding up very well considering the freezing temperatures.”

He added: “We do not expect, at […]

Tragedy On M62 Leads To Long Delays

A tragic accident on the M62 near Saddleworth this afternoon left a driver dead and forced the motorway to be closed westbound. That led to hours of delays for frustrated motorists.

According to West Yorkshire Police, the accident happened just after 1:15pm on the westbound carriageway. The Examiner later reported that a man parked on the hard shoulder near Scammonden, then got out of his car and was sadly hit by a passing lorry.

The road was shut westbound between […]

Springhead Lose Again

The weather badly disrupted the weekend’s sporting fixtures. But in one football match that did go ahead, Springhead went down to a 2-1 defeat away to Manchester Gregorians in the Manchester League.

Their continuing poor form means Springhead are 12th in the 16-team table, which can be viewed here.

Mossley’s game against Salford City was called off because of a frozen pitch. However, they did play last Tuesday, when they thrashed Trafford 6-0.

Kristian Dennis and Callum Byrne scored two […]

Cold And Snowy Weather All Week

A wintry but sunny scene in Delph yesterday.

Saddleworth has so far escaped the worst of the snow which has affected other parts of the country. But we’re going to get our fair share this week, if the forecasts turn out to be accurate.

Yesterday was a beautifully clear and sunny day as shown by the image of Delph at the top of this post, but it may well be the last one we […]

Police Offer Free Number Plate Screws

Police in Saddleworth are today offering drivers free tamper-proof screws for their number plates, to help reduce crime. Burglaries and other crimes in our area have been committed by offenders who have stolen number plates from other vehicles to cover their tracks.

Officers will be supplying and fitting the screws for free between 11am and 1pm today, in the car park at the leisure centre in Uppermill. It’s part of the latest ‘village a month’ initiative, which this month is […]

Burst Pipe Closes Grains Road

The Delph end of Grains Road today.

Grains Road has been closed because of a burst pipe. Engineers from United Utilities are now repairing the problem, near the Delph end of the road.

A local resident told Saddleworth News that the pipe burst sometime yesterday, adding that she had reported it to the police late last night. She said that when she went past the scene this morning nobody had yet arrived to deal with the problem, although repair […]

Council Says It’s Ready For The Snow

A grit bin in Delph. There are another 601 of these around the borough of Oldham.

With snow likely to hit Saddleworth over the coming hours and days, Oldham Council has insisted it is “fully prepared” to deal with bad weather. Meanwhile, an investigation by Saddleworth News has revealed how our local councils have stepped up their efforts to prepare for winter following last year’s record cold snap.

Oldham Council has said it’s now got more than 7,000 tonnes […]
