Snow-covered bins in Dobcross today. Several inches of snow overnight has left Saddleworth fully blanketed in white for the first time this winter, and has led to disruption to local services including bin collections and buses. Oldham Council announced this morning that all refuse collections in Saddleworth had been suspended because of the weather. A decision will be made tomorrow as to whether the collections can resume. Organisers of a Shop Local Festival in Uppermill next March are appealing for local retailers to book one of the stalls available. The farmer’s market-style event will take place at Uppermill Civic Hall on Sunday 20 March. The festival is being jointly organised by Saddleworth Parish Council and the local branch of the WI. Commuters are being warned that the overnight snow could cause delays on bus services in and around Saddleworth this morning. Passengers are being advised to leave extra time for their journeys. A tragic accident on the M62 near Saddleworth this afternoon left a driver dead and forced the motorway to be closed westbound. That led to hours of delays for frustrated motorists. According to West Yorkshire Police, the accident happened just after 1:15pm on the westbound carriageway. Police in Saddleworth are today offering drivers free tamper-proof screws for their number plates, to help reduce crime. Burglaries and other crimes in our area have been committed by offenders who have stolen number plates from other vehicles to cover their tracks. Officers will be supplying and fitting the screws for free between 11am and 1pm today, in the car park at the leisure centre in Uppermill.
