Crompton Moor Users Look Forward

Crompton Moor

Users of Crompton Moor say they want to look forward and be constructive, as the row continues over Oldham Council’s plans to put mountain bike trails and other facilities on the site. However, the Friends of Crompton Moor campaign group remains concerned about the future of the area between Shaw and Denshaw, accusing the council of working “hand in hand” with cyclists to the exclusion of other local people.

Mossley Face Fixture Pile-Up

Mossley have again been thwarted by the weather in their latest attempt to play Skelmersdale United. A waterlogged pitch at Skelmersdale means tonight’s game is off, and leaves Mossley facing a fixure pile-up of ten matches in three weeks.

Two of those games will be against Skelmersdale. The clubs will now meet at Skelmersdale on that fixture’s original date of Saturday 17 April, with the return match rearranged for Ashton United’s Hurst Cross ground on Thursday 22 April. The receipts […]

Labour Hopefuls “Were Asked About Dancing On Ice”

Would-be MPs trying to win the Labour nomination for the Stalybridge and Hyde constituency were reportedly asked whether they knew who had won Dancing On Ice. A high-level selection panel posed questions about pop culture as it put together the shortlist of contenders.

Longdendale Councillor Jonny Reynolds was announced as the winner last night, following a postal ballot of local party members. Ironically he was initially left off the shortlist, although that allegedly had more to do with the […]

Snow Returns To Saddleworth

The weather forecasters have been proved right. Despite it being nearly April, snow has returned to Saddleworth. Enough fell overnight for a light covering on most of the higher ground this morning.

The A635 Greenfield to Holmfirth road was closed, while all other routes across the Pennines were described as passable with care. The picture above, taken by Paul Steele, shows the scene near Diggle.

The bad weather isn’t expected to last. Sunny spells and milder temperatures are predicted […]

Car Thieves Attack Man In Mossley

A man had his car stolen by thugs wielding an iron bar in Mossley early yesterday. Police say the incident happened on the Hey Farm Estate at about 1:45am.

The victim, who’s 57, was confronted by two masked men as he got out of his white Vauxhall Astra. One of the attackers hit the man on the arm with the metal bar, then told his accomplice to stab the man, which prompted the victim to hand over his car keys.

Mossley Game Rescheduled

Mossley’s home game with Skelmersdale United, due to be played at Ashton United’s Hurst Cross ground last night, was postponed because of a waterlogged pitch. The teams will now try to play tonight instead, but at Skelmersdale. The game is subject to a 4 o’clock inspection.

Last night’s match has been rescheduled for Saturday 17 April at Mossley’s Seel Park ground. The receipts from that game will be donated to Ashton United, who have been acting as temporary landlords for […]

Reynolds Wins Labour Nomination

Jonny Reynolds has won the battle to be Labour’s candidate in Stalybridge and Hyde in the general election. The Longdendale Councillor beat his two rivals, Peter Wheeler and Dr Kailash Chand, in a postal ballot of local party members.

Cllr Reynolds’ victory was announced at Hyde Town Hall last night. He replaces James Purnell as Labour’s candidate, after the former cabinet minister decided to leave frontline politics.

It’s the end of what proved to be a controversial selection contest. […]

£1m Boost For Dunwood Park

Dunwood Park (picture: Oldham Council)

More than a million pounds is going to be spent improving Dunwood Park in Shaw. Oldham Council says the work will turn the beauty spot into “the equal of any park nationwide.”

The council’s been awarded £1.093m in lottery money for the project. It’s also putting in £270,000 of its own cash.

New features planned for the park include a community meeting room, extra toilets […]

Members of the Saddleworth Peace Movement set up a stall in Uppermill on Saturday, collecting signatures against the proposed replacement of the UK’s fleet of Trident nuclear submarines. The Liberal Democrat candidate for Oldham East and Saddleworth at the forthcoming general election, Elwyn Watkins, was among those who signed the petition.

The protest was organised by Parish Councillor Ken […]

A Walk Along The Micklehurst Loop

The route of the Micklehurst Loop is now overgrown in places. (picture: Worthing Wanderer)

A former Saddleworth resident has returned to the area to take a walk along the disused Stalybridge to Diggle railway line. Paul Willis writes the Worthing Wanderer website about the various walks he goes on throughout the British countryside, and his latest post is about the so-called Micklehurst Loop.

You can read Paul’s article about his walk here.

He gives lots of information about the […]

Cash Reminder Over Community Projects

People and organisations in our area are being reminded that money is available for community projects from the so-called South Pennine LEADER fund. Saddleworth Parish Councillors have been told that the awarding body had been too “cautious” in giving grants at first, meaning there’s plenty of money left in the pot.

A total of £2.4m was jointly awarded by the Westminster government and the European Union to Pennine Prospects, the quango which promotes rural regeneration in the South Pennines. The […]

Letter: John Battye As Ernst Blofeld?

Below is a letter to the editor sent by Ken Hulme, who represents Delph and Denshaw as an independent on Saddleworth Parish Council. He will also be standing as an independent in the Saddleworth North ward in the elections to Oldham Council on 6 May.

I’ve reproduced the letter in full. If you would like to respond to the points made in the letter, you can either leave a comment below this post, or send an e-mail by clicking on […]

A View From Saddleworth Moor

A view of Yeoman Hey and Dove Stone reservoirs near Greenfield, taken from Saddleworth Moor. (picture: Robert Hough)

Saddleworth Moor has been back in the national news in recent days, as volunteers begin their efforts to find the body of Moors Murders victim Keith Bennett. But the moors can be beautiful as well as bleak, as this image from local photographer Robert Hough demonstrates.

It shows Yeoman Hey and Dove Stone reservoirs, with the former in the foreground. The […]

Councils Approve Greater Manchester City-Region

Saddleworth is going to become part of the new Greater Manchester city-region. All ten of Greater Manchester’s borough councils, including Oldham Council, have now agreed to pool some of their resources so joint decisions can be taken over matters including transport, housing, skills and regeneration.

The ten authorities already work together on a more informal basis through the Association of Greater Manchester Authorities. That body will now be strengthened, and it’ll also get extra powers devolved to it from the […]
