Mossley have again been thwarted by the weather in their latest attempt to play Skelmersdale United. A waterlogged pitch at Skelmersdale means tonight’s game is off, and leaves Mossley facing a fixure pile-up of ten matches in three weeks. Two of those games will be against Skelmersdale. The weather forecasters have been proved right. Despite it being nearly April, snow has returned to Saddleworth. Enough fell overnight for a light covering on most of the higher ground this morning. The A635 Greenfield to Holmfirth road was closed, while all other routes across the Pennines were described as passable with care. A man had his car stolen by thugs wielding an iron bar in Mossley early yesterday. Police say the incident happened on the Hey Farm Estate at about 1:45am. The victim, who’s 57, was confronted by two masked men as he got out of his white Vauxhall Astra. One of the attackers hit the man on the arm with the metal bar, then told his accomplice to stab the man, which prompted the victim to hand over his car keys. […]
Mossley’s home game with Skelmersdale United, due to be played at Ashton United’s Hurst Cross ground last night, was postponed because of a waterlogged pitch. The teams will now try to play tonight instead, but at Skelmersdale. The game is subject to a 4 o’clock inspection. Jonny Reynolds has won the battle to be Labour’s candidate in Stalybridge and Hyde in the general election. The Longdendale Councillor beat his two rivals, Peter Wheeler and Dr Kailash Chand, in a postal ballot of local party members. Cllr Reynolds’ victory was announced at Hyde Town Hall last night. Saddleworth is going to become part of the new Greater Manchester city-region. All ten of Greater Manchester’s borough councils, including Oldham Council, have now agreed to pool some of their resources so joint decisions can be taken over matters including transport, housing, skills and regeneration. The ten authorities already work together on a more informal basis through the Association of Greater Manchester Authorities.
