A photo of a snowy Saddleworth has been nominated for a competition prize. The view has been shortlisted as one of the Wonders of Greater Manchester.

The contest is being run by Transport Manchester, which operates System One Travelcards, offering various discounts on […]

The orphanage at Kalofer. (all pictures: Charlene Bradford)

A woman from Saddleworth has thanked local people for donating to her appeal to help children in Bulgarian orphanages. Charlene Bradford, who is originally from Diggle but now lives in Bulgaria, began the effort a year ago, and has already been able to get valuable supplies to the youngsters.

Charlene told Saddleworth News she’d already had assistance from “so many kind and wonderful people and companies.” Her mum still lives in […]

Rangers Under 9s Appeal For New Players

Saddleworth Rangers are keen for new players to join their Under 9s team. Anyone interested in taking part should contact Garry Eyres via e-mail on garryeyres-at-live-dot-com (Editor’s note: I’ve written the address like that to protect Garry from spam).

Here’s Garry’s report of the Under 9s match last weekend:

“After deservedly winning their last two games against some very good opposition the lads faced a tough trip to Orrell St James on a bitterly cold October morning. Rangers started with […]

Dobcross Double Yellow Lines Back On Agenda

Dobcross Square. Soon, those cars might not be allowed to park there.

The idea of putting double yellow lines in Dobcross Square and at the top of Woods Lane has been put forward again. It was discussed during Monday night’s meeting of Saddleworth Parish Council at the Civic Hall in Uppermill.

Cllr Royce Franklin, who chairs the sub-committee which looks at transport matters, said the proposal had been suggested at the group’s most recent meeting. He told councillors cars […]

November’s Dobcross Diary

The new edition of the Dobcross Diary is out now. It’ll be delivered to homes in the village over the coming days, but anyone who lives elsewhere can read it online at the Diary’s website here.

As always there’s a great mixture of local news and features, along with a useful what’s on guide. It’s produced and distrubuted each month by editor Michael Powis and his group of volunteers so it’s well worth supporting.

Civic Hall Work Delayed Until After Woolas Verdict

Uppermill Civic Hall

Work to extend and improve Uppermill Civic Hall can’t start for the time being because of the Phil Woolas case. The verdict in the election court hearing is due to be delivered at the hall a week tomorrow, and it’s hoped the modernisation work will begin as soon as possible after that.

Saddleworth Parish Council has now received government approval to borrow £500,000 to fund the improvements. The single-storey rear extension is going to be replaced […]

Minister Rules Out Huddersfield Maternity U-Turn

Huddersfield Royal Infirmary (picture: Ian M/Geograph)

Hopes of bringing full maternity services back to Huddersfield Royal Infirmary have been dashed by the government. Responding to a question from Colne Valley MP Jason McCartney in the Commons, junior minister Anne Milton said it wouldn’t be possible to “turn back the clock.”

During an adjournment debate on maternity services on Tuesday night, Mr McCartney rose to describe the issue as “emotional and controversial” in his constituency. He told MPs that consultant-led […]

Uppermill Christmas Lights Appeal

Uppermill High Street

Local business leaders are asking for the public’s help to put the Christmas cheer into Uppermill this year. The Saddleworth Lights Committee has begun fundraising to cover the costs of having lights on the main Christmas tree in the Square, as well as lights in the other nearby trees.

The SLC is a joint effort led by Pam Byrne from the Queen Anne Tea Room, butcher Paul Lowcock from Paul’s Quality Meats, and the Kryshia fashion […]

A Typical Mixed Bag Of Weather

We’ve got a variety of weather to look forward to in the coming days, with plenty of wind around too.

Today will be much like yesterday, with bright and breezy conditions and the chance of the odd shower later in the day. Highs during the day will be 14C, and again it’ll be a mild night with lows of 11C.

Friday starts much more overcast and is forecast to remain cloudy, with strong winds approaching 20mph as well. Temperatures […]

Pontin’s Success For Uppermill And Marsden

Uppermill Band

The brass bands of Uppermill and Marsden both enjoyed success last weekend at the Pontin’s Championships, held at the holiday camp at Prestatyn in north Wales. Uppermill won the Third Section, with the Marsden Silver Band claiming overall victory in the Harry and Margaret Mortimer Championship.

Uppermill were drawn last to play during Saturday’s Third Section contest, but their performance of Partita for Bands (Postcards from Home) was enough to help them beat bands from Marple and […]

Lib Dems Cleared Over Mosque Row

Cllr Howard Sykes

Seven senior Liberal Democrat politicians, including Oldham Council leader Howard Sykes, have been cleared over the alleged fast-tracking of planning approval for a new mosque in Glodwick. An investigation by the Standards Board for England found the six current and one former councillors had done nothing wrong.

The inquiry followed a complaint by local Labour MPs Phil Woolas and Michael Meacher. They queried whether the planning application had been rushed through by Lib Dems on Oldham […]

Optimism Over Future Of Local Railways

Cllr John Hudson

A senior Saddleworth councillor has expressed hope for the future development of railways in our area, following talks with a government minister. During Monday night’s parish council meeting at Uppermill Civic Hall, Cllr John Hudson revealed he’d met Transport Minister Theresa Villiers on the fringes of the recent Conservative conference in Birmingham.

Cllr Hudson said he found Ms Villiers to be “clued up” on railways issues, adding that he was “impressed” by her knowledge. He said […]

Gavin Webster Back At Off The Rails

Gavin Webster (picture via Off The Rails)

Newcastle-based comedian Gavin Webster returns to Off The Rails in Greenfield this Sunday to headline a special Halloween show. He’s performed at the night in the past, so club regulars should know what to expect.

In case you haven’t come across him before, the blurb says to “expect a discourse on the finer arts of foul language, the true state of the world’s panda population and the ukelele to be played. Badly.” […]
