The leak on Uppermill High Street last night (picture: Nick Watts)
Engineers have been working to fix a serious water leak on Uppermill High Street. A brief section of one side of the street near the Hare and Hounds pub has been closed to traffic today, and temporary lights have been in place, causing delays to vehicles passing through the village.
The leak was spotted last night by Saddleworth News reader Nick Watts, who posted the […]
One of last week’s cultural highlights was a gig by The Wedding Present at the Picturedrome in Holmfirth. The legendary Leeds band, fronted by David Gedge, played on Thursday night.
You can read more about how the gig went from the Sunset Over Slawit blog here, and from the Olthwaite blog here. Sounds as if a great, if sweaty, night was had by all. The picture at the top of this article was taken by Twitter user Jon Harris, […]
Below is a letter from Diggle resident Dr John Hewitt, which has been forwarded on to me (with his permission) by parish councillor Royce Franklin. I’ve reproduced the letter in full. It’s about Oldham Council’s dog control proposals, and you can read a Saddleworth News article about that here.
If you want to respond to the points made in the letter, you can either leave a comment below this post, or send an e-mail by clicking on the Contact option […]
Mossley secured their first competitive victory of the season on Saturday, with a 2-0 win over Witton Albion in the FA Cup Preliminary Round. Connor Hampson gave them a first-half lead, with substitute Matty Kay sealing victory through a goal in the last minute.
You can read a full report of the match and see pictures at the Mossley website here.
Mossley will travel to either St Helens Town or Glossop North End on 11 September […]
Delph and Dobcross kept their solid third place in the Huddersfield League over the weekend, as they followed up a washout against Skelmanthorpe with a comfortable victory over Holmfirth.
On Saturday, a D&D side featuring your correspondent making his first team debut, hosted Skelmanthorpe at a soggy Huddersfield Road. Rain meant the match was reduced to 33 overs, but there was still time for the visiting professional Wasim Jaffer to score a century, making the most of being dropped early […]
Here comes the sun at last. We’re finally going to enjoy something approaching summer over the next few days, although the clear skies will mean temperatures will fall sharply.
Today will be fine for the Bank Holiday, with regular sunny spells and highs of 18C. However, it’s going to be chilly this evening with one forecast putting temperatures as low as 3C overnight, which isn’t much like summer at all.
Tuesday’s fine again though, with more sunshine and light cloud, […]
The Mumps Bridge is removed. (all pictures: www.twitter.com/crofty)
We saw the last of one of Oldham’s best-known landmarks last night. The northern bridge over the Mumps roundabout was removed as part of work to extend the Metrolink tram network.
Trams are scheduled to start running on the old Oldham Loop railway line late next year, with a new route through the town centre due to start operating in 2014. The trams will run at street level, which is why […]

Derwent Reservoir is a little out of our area, but it’ll be familiar to anyone who regularly takes the A57 road, and this image is so stunning I thought I’d share it. It was taken by Colin Boulter from Neilson Reeves Photography, and it won him another gold award from the Society of Wedding and Portrait Photographers.
Posting the image on the Neilson Reeves blog, Colin wrote: “Landscape photography requires a lot of patience […]
The Yanks procession goes past Castleshaw on its way to Standedge.
There’s been a great response to a letter published on Saddleworth News last week about Yanks Weekend. A reader, Maryanne Bray, wrote to explain that she’d been disappointed by what she thought was a lack of stalls and people at this year’s festival when she visited on the Saturday. You can read her letter in full here.
Plenty of you have written comments below her letter giving your […]
The Scarborough Flyer passes by the old Moorgate Halt in Uppermill this morning. (pictures: Nick Watts)
Here’s the Scarborough Flyer steam service as it made its way past the site of the old Moorgate Halt near Uppermill, at about half past nine this morning. The train is running between Crewe and Scarborough and back again, via Saddleworth and the Standedge Tunnel, every Friday until 10 September.
The service is operated by The Railway Touring Company, which gives more information […]
The Friends of Mossley Park are going to be doing some more work in the park tomorrow morning. Anyone is welcome to join them between 10am and 12pm.
Their plan this weekend is to pull up the Ragwort which has appeared in the park this summer, in an attempt to stop it reseeding and spreading. If you can’t make it for 10am but still want to join in, the Friends say to just come and find them, they should be […]
Oldham Council’s plans to get tough on inconsiderate dog owners could have an impact in Saddleworth. The council has begun a public consultation on proposals which include banning dogs from children’s play areas and forcing dog owners to keep their pets on leads in certain parks.
Under the plans, dogs would be banned from the playground at Diggle Tip next to the Huddersfield Narrow Canal and from the nearby Ward Lane play area, as well as […]
The sewage leak at Swan Meadow playground last week. The problem was quickly sorted. (picture: Ken Hulme)
There’s been another sewage leak at the Swan Meadow playground in Delph. The leak was spotted last Thursday by local parish councillor Ken Hulme, and after he raised the alarm the problem was fixed later that day.
Cllr Hulme said the sewage was “cascading” into the River Tame. He added: “To be fair United Utilities, Oldham Council and the Environment Agency […]
Our local police have again warned residents to make sure their homes are secure, to help keep burglars at bay. In an e-mail to householders, the Saddleworth and Lees Neighbourhood Policing Team said that there had been “a sharp increase” in the number of burglaries involving unlocked doors and windows across the Greater Manchester force area.
The statement went on: “These crimes are preventable. We need the help of the local community, as it is so […]
