New Bulletin From Saddleworth News TV

Here’s the latest Saddleworth News TV video bulletin, made by students from The Oldham College with their tutor John Eccles.

In this programme, there’s a preview of the Saddleworth Festival of the Arts, which begins this weekend, with Festival Chairman Jim Scott. There’s also a look ahead to another forthcoming local event, the Diggle Blues Festival, as well as some video footage of the recent Mossley wildfire captured by one of the students. Austerlands Suffer Double Defeat

Austerlands were beaten in both the Tanner Cup and the Saddleworth League over the weekend, going down to Uppermill and Stayley respectively. With a report, here’s Neil Cadd:

Two Thrilling Wins For Saddleworth

Saddleworth enjoyed two close victories in the weekend’s cricket, with a cup win over Droylsden and a league triumph against Bamford Fieldhouse.

Boarshurst Band Organise Fundraising Duck Race

The Boarshurst Band in action at Dobcross Band Club recently.

Rain Clears As Weather Improves

After the miserable holiday Monday, the weather is finally forecast to take a turn for the better this week.

Today should be mostly dry and sunny, with just the odd shower likely. Temperatures should reach 16C.

Wednesday will be dry again albeit cloudy, but there should be more sunshine around on Thursday and Friday, and the temperatures should start to warm up a little too.

Former Oldham Mayor Reflects On The Riots

Former Mayor of Oldham Riaz Ahmad has been recalling the Oldham riots, which took place ten years ago.

Mr Ahmad, who was then the Deputy Mayor of the borough, and infamously had his Chadderton home firebombed several weeks after the violence, used an interview to say he’s “confident” there won’t be a repeat of the riots during his lifetime.

Grotton Sledgehammer Attack Suspects Freed On Bail

Three teenagers arrested on suspicion of aggravated burglary following an armed raid on a house in Grotton have been released on police bail.

The trio, aged 17, 18 and 19, were all detained by police shortly after the incident, which took place on Grotton Meadows at about 11pm on Wednesday night.

They’ve been freed and will answer bail on 5 August, as the police investigation continues.

Services To End At Diggle’s Wrigley Mill Methodist Church

Wrigley Mill Methodist Church in Diggle, the home of the organ played in the video above, is to end religious services next month.

Church members made the decision at a recent meeting because of the falling number of worshippers at the church, which is on Huddersfield Road.

The last service will take place on Sunday 26 June. According to the members, the service will be a celebration of almost 150 years of worship at Wrigley Mill.

Teenage Girl Attacked In Lees

A girl of 16 was attacked on the path next to Wellyhole Street in Lees on Wednesday night, according to the police.

A statement issued by GMP said the victim was out walking her dog when the incident happened at about 8:40pm.

She was approached by her attacker, a young white man of about 18 or 19-years-old, who threatened her with a stone and told her to kneel down.

The Frolick To Bring Baroque To Saddleworth Festival

Award-winning baroque group The Frolick will be treating Saddleworth to a taste of 18th Century London during the Festival of the Arts, which begins in just over a week.

They’ll be performing what they describe as songs of “love, recession, melancholy, drinking and riotous fun” at St Anne’s Church in Lydgate on Tuesday 7 June at 7:30pm.

Getting Potholes Filled In Around Saddleworth

Not much exercises folk around Saddleworth quite like the issue of potholes. Residents and councillors alike regularly describe various surfaces as being “the worst” in the area, a discussion which has become even more heated since the impact of the bad winter weather on our roads.

Oldham Council has regularly defended itself (see here) against claims the borough’s roads are in poor repair. The council has what it calls the ‘pothole moles’ which go around the borough tackling the issue.

CCTV Images Released After Vandalism At Mossley Mill

Woodend Mill in Bottom Mossley has issued these CCTV images, after two recent incidents of vandalism.

The pictures were taken just after 11pm on Friday 13 May. According to the Mill, the four young men shown in the images were on level three of the Mill 2 building at the complex. Some padlocked doors to individually-rented units, used by artists and small businesses, were damaged.

The people behind the charity Twestival held in Oldham back in March have revealed their next big event.

A family fun day is being organised for Denshaw on Saturday 9 July, with proceeds going to the local Scouts.
