Councillor Defends Churchill Fields Plans

The rugby pitch in the middle of the track at Churchill Fields.

A local councillor who has been heavily involved in plans to improve the facilities at Churchill Fields has defended the way the proposals have been put together.

Athletics club Saddleworth Runners has criticised the plans, which would involve getting rid of the running track at the fields. The area has long suffered from serious drainage problems forcing events to be postponed.

Councillors want to improve the playing […]

The Boarshurst Silver Band has qualified for the finals of the National Brass Band Championships. That’s after Boarshurst finished second in the Fourth section at yesterday’s North West regional qualifying event at Blackpool’s Winter Gardens.

Under the musical directorship of David Ashworth, the band performed the test piece of Prelude, Song and Dance at the Empress Ballroom, and took one of the four […]

Uppermill’s Cup Hopes End In Extra Time

Uppermill’s impressive run in the West Riding Challenge Cup came to an end on Saturday, as they lost their quarter-final to Huddersfield side Bay Athletic. It finished 4-3 after extra time.

It was a terrific effort by Uppermill, because Bay Athletic are currently top of the West Riding League Premier Division, four levels above Uppermill in the football pyramid. In fact, Uppermill led 3-1 at one stage, before the favourites came back to eventually secure their place in the last […]

Police Issue Burglaries Warning

Our local police have told Saddleworth residents to be extra vigilant following a recent series of burglaries in the area. Officers have warned that criminals have been using implements to smash windows in order to get into properties.

There’s been a variety of incidents in the past week across Saddleworth and Lees. Over the weekend, police reported that two men were caught following a burglary in Delph, thanks to neighbours who raised the alarm.

In Lees, two separate vans were […]

Cabinet Backs Plan To Cut Councillors

Plans to cut the number of borough councillors have been approved by Oldham Council’s Cabinet. The proposals will now go before a meeting of the full council in April.

The Liberal Democrat/Conservative administration which runs the council wants to reduce the number of councillors from 60 to 40. That would mean the number of Saddleworth representatives on the authority would be cut from nine to six, with two councillors sitting for each ward instead of the current three.

The council […]

A reminder that a public meeting will be held tomorrow over the future of Churchill Playing Fields. The Saddleworth and Lees District Partnership has called the meeting, which will begin at 7:30pm at the Civic Hall in Uppermill.

A sub-group of the District Partnership, which is a body made up of councillors and other community leaders and funded by Oldham Council, has been working for the past year on possible solutions to the widely-known problems at the […]

Achtung Baby: A Bat You Say?

Achtung Baby is a column about parenting written by Suze Nowak, who is originally from Denshaw and is now bringing up her family in Germany. This article first appeared on Parent Dish here, and you can follow Suze on Twitter here.

IT’S FASCHING time and unbelievably I forgot again. I swore last time that we would book a holiday or feign illness this year. But my memory failed me and it crept up like a nasty rash that you’re unaware […]

A Mostly Dry But Overcast Week

Several days of cloudy conditions are forecast for this week, but it should remain mostly dry.

There’s the chance of the odd shower today amid the generally overcast weather, with top temperatures of 8C.

Tuesday should be a lot brighter with sunny spells, but we should see more of the cloud on Wednesday and Thursday. Temperatures should remain more or less the same, and it’ll feel a bit chilly because of a fairly brisk breeze at times.

The number of fires on moorland in our area more than doubled last year, according to figures obtained by Saddleworth News.

There were 42 blazes on moorland and heathland in the borough of Oldham in 2010, compared with just 16 in 2009.

It was a similar picture across the whole of Greater Manchester, with 154 moorland fires last year, significantly higher than the 2009 tally of 68.

Any idea who these chaps are? (picture: GMP)

A photograph showing a group of mystery Victorian men has been discovered in the archives of Greater Manchester Police. The picture was taken in 1899, during the jubilee celebrations of the incorporation of the borough of Oldham.

The image was found in the collection of the Greater Manchester Police Museum, which is based at the old Newton Street police station in Manchester’s Northern Quarter. […]

No Return For Denshaw Shop

The old Post Office and shop in Denshaw.

Hopes of bringing a shop back to Denshaw have been dashed. After a consultation on the idea, the local residents’ association has decided not to pursue plans for a community-run store.

The old Post Office and shop finally shut in 2009, after changing hands several times over recent years. Some locals hoped a reopened shop might help community spirit in the village.

A planning application has been made to turn the […]

This month, there’s an interview with the new landlord of The Swan, and an update on the aftermath of the devastating fire at Husteads Riding School. There’s also the usual […]

Runners Angry Over Churchill Fields Plans

Jill Davies with members of the Saddleworth Runners at Churchill Fields today.

The Saddleworth Runners Club is angry at council plans to remove the current athletics track from Churchill Fields. Proposals to be presented at a public meeting next Tuesday are expected to include the idea of replacing it with a grass track instead.

The playing fields have suffered for years from poor drainage, and are often waterlogged. Sporting fixtures are regularly […]
