Uppermill’s impressive run in the West Riding Challenge Cup came to an end on Saturday, as they lost their quarter-final to Huddersfield side Bay Athletic. It finished 4-3 after extra time. Our local police have told Saddleworth residents to be extra vigilant following a recent series of burglaries in the area. Officers have warned that criminals have been using implements to smash windows in order to get into properties. There’s been a variety of incidents in the past week across Saddleworth and Lees. Plans to cut the number of borough councillors have been approved by Oldham Council’s Cabinet. The proposals will now go before a meeting of the full council in April. The Liberal Democrat/Conservative administration which runs the council wants to reduce the number of councillors from 60 to 40. There were 42 blazes on moorland and heathland in the borough of Oldham in 2010, compared with just 16 in 2009. After a consultation on the idea, the local residents’ association has decided not to pursue plans for a community-run store.
