Three Saddleworth members of Oldham Council are concerned about the possible impact of a project to repair walls around the area. Oldham Council is spending almost £20m of Government cash on the scheme, most of it in Saddleworth. The new blue sign on the A635 above Greenfield Visitors arriving in Saddleworth by road are being greeted by new signs. They’re in the new bright blue colours of Oldham Council, and replace the old white-and-black ones, some of which were more than 30 years old. Similar signs are going up all across Oldham Borough, although the ones in Saddleworth mention the fact the area is “in the historic County of York.” […]
The March issue of the Dobcross Diary is finished, and is currently being posted through letterboxes around the village by a team of volunteers. Council tax bills in Saddleworth will go up by 1.9% from April, after Oldham Council formally approved its new budget last night. The increase was confirmed along with a series of cuts and other savings, so the council can fill an £11m gap in its plans for the 2010/11 financial year. The first Holmfirth Film Festival takes place in May, and aspiring film-makers have the chance to enter a short film competition. Organisers say they want “quirky and individual” films inspired by the people and places of the Holme Valley. Mossley station A new campaign group aimed at improving Mossley station met for the first time last night. More than 30 people went along to George Lawton Hall for what was described by the event’s organiser as a “lively debate” about the problems and opportunities facing the station. A Saddleworth resident has been chosen to help judge a national book prize. Janet Harrison, who works for Oldham Libraries encouraging parents and carers to read to and with their children, will be part of the panel for the Booktrust Early Years Award 2010. The charity brass band concert in aid of Help For Heroes will take place at the Civic Hall in Uppermill on Saturday 3 July. Tickets are priced £10, and are currently available from the event’s Facebook page here. Residents in Tameside are facing a council tax rise of nearly 2.5% from April. The increase was confirmed at last night’s full council meeting, along with details of the council’s £750m budget.
