Saddleworth Historical Society Dates for October

SADDLEWORTH HISTORICAL SOCIETY

Wednesday 11th October 2017, 7.30pm. At the Saddleworth Museum, Uppermill, Saddleworth Historical Society has its Annual General Meeting followed by an Illustrated Presentation by Victor Khadem entitled “Saddleworth Chapel: From Foundation to Reformation.”

All welcome, but a charge of £3 on the night for non-members. Prospective new members most welcome. Refreshments available.

Record numbers of birds seen at Dovestone

Wading birds gathered in record numbers at our beloved nature spot Dovestone Reservoir this breeding season, thanks to an ambitious ongoing bog restoration programme.

Over the summer, RSPB staff and volunteer surveyors recorded 49 pairs of dunlins at the Saddleworth site, up a quarter from the 39 pairs observed in 2014 and up five pairs on last year’s previous record of 44.

In Feb 2015 and then again in Aug 2017 Saddleworth News polled its readers asking where they would prefer the new Saddleworth School to be built. Saddleworth School is the local mixed-sex secondary school educating children of 11 to 16 years of age. It is presently located in Uppermill, Saddleworth.

The poll was conducted purely out of interest. The school awaits being built.

An amber weather warning has been issued for the region between 00.05 and 06.00 tomorrow morning ( Wed 13). Storm Aileen will bring a brief spell of very strong winds with gusts up to 65-75 mph during the early hours of the morning. Thanks to @ChadWeather for the updates.

CCTV footage of Armed Robbery in Middleton

Officers have released CCTV after an armed robbery at a shop in Middleton. At around 9.55pm on Tuesday 8 August 2017, two men armed with a machete and a sledgehammer entered the Spar on Hollin Lane. They both ran into the store before the one armed with the machete punched a staff member in the face, while the one armed with the sledgehammer jumped over the counter and forced money from the tills.

Emmaus to celebrate its 20yrs in Mossley

Homelessness charity Emmaus Mossley will hold a day-long community event next weekend to celebrate its twentieth anniversary.

The ‘20th Birthday Bash’ will take place on Saturday 16 September and mark 20 years since the opening of the Emmaus Mossley community building at Longlands Mill. Over the years the community has grown and it is now home to 26 companions – formerly homeless people who live and work at Emmaus Mossley.

Oldham teacher jailed for sexual offences with pupil

A former Oldham teacher has been jailed after having sex with a pupil.

Darren Fisher (11/08/1977) of Woodlands Grove, Halifax, was sentenced to five years in prison at Manchester Minshull Street Crown Court today (Thursday 7 September 2017). He previously pleaded guilty to six counts of sexual activity with a child and six counts of engaging in sexual activity with a person under the age of 18 whilst in a position of trust.
