Teenager T Jay Turner has been sworn in as the new Youth Mayor of Oldham.

The 17-year-old officially took on the role at the Youth Mayor-making ceremony on Wednesday, June 29 in the Council Chambers.

Five injured after car crash on Holmfirth Road

Emergency services attend to the injured after the head-on crash

Five people have been injured after two cars collided on the A635, Holmfirth Road, at Greenfield this afternoon.

Emergency services were called to the accident at around 5.30pm, after reports of a head-on crash involving two vehicles.

Three men in one of the vehicles, a Vauxhall Astra, were taken to hospital.

Saddleworth Civic Trust need volunteers for graveyard clearance work

Saddleworth Civic Trust will be undertaking grave clearance work at Saddleworth Church Graveyard on Gellfield Lane in Uppermill this Saturday 2nd July.

Anyone who is interested in helping should meet at 10am, or later to suit, at the Graveyard on Gellfield Lane.

You are advised to wear suitable attire for the weather conditions and the for work that will be undertaken, you are asked to bring your own suitable garden tools such as spades, rakes, non-electrical strimmers and cutting tools.

A 14-year-old Saddleworth schoolboy has joined his father’s cycling club in a bid to raise money for a close family friend who needs cancer treatment that is unavailable on the NHS.

Tom Doyle, from Greenfield, who attends Saddleworth School, has started cycling with father Chris as part of his Duke of Edinburgh bronze award which requires him to do some physical activity with a club.

Changes to rubbish and recycling across the borough

Oldham Council’s Cabinet has approved proposals to change the way rubbish and recycling is collected across the borough.

From October, bin collections will switch from a two-weekly to a three-weekly cycle – with food and garden collections remaining weekly.

The changes aim to improve the borough’s recycling rate by 12 per cent and reduce the amount spent on general rubbish disposal by as much as £3 million over the next two years.

The new scheme will begin on October 3.

Royal British Legion to hold candlelit vigil to commemorate Battle of the Somme

The Saddleworth branch of the Royal British Legion are holding a candlelit vigil on Thursday, June 30 at 9:30 pm at the cenotaph at St Chad’s park, Uppermill, to commemorate the Battle of the Somme.

Cllr Pam Byrne, chair of Saddleworth parish council, will lay a wreath and the service with be conducted ex-RAF squadron leader and RBL padre, Rev John Rosedale, Saddleworth Team Rector.

Dobcross Brass Monkeys band will play at the ceremony.

Arrest made after Bailey Mill fire in Delph

Police investigating the fire at Bailey Mill in Delph have made an arrest.

Shortly after 3pm on Tuesday, 14 June 2016, police were called to the listed Bailey Mill on Oldham Road in Delph.

Emergency services attended and evacuated nearby houses as well as enforcing road closures around the area.

Firefighters extinguished the fire and the building was totally gutted.

Bailey Mill in Delph destroyed by huge blaze this afternoon

One of Saddleworth’s most iconic mills has been ravaged by fire this afternoon leaving it in a state of almost total destruction.

Firefighters were called to Bailey Mill in Delph shortly after 3.00pm following reports the derelict seven-storey building was on fire.

Four fire appliances and an aerial appliance were sent to the scene and on arrival firefighters found the mill well alight.

Lucky escape for driver as car stopped from rolling down embankment in Diggle

Emergency services at the scene of the accident on Standedge Road in Diggle

Police are investigating after a man was left injured when his car careered off the road in Diggle.

The accident happened at around 4.00pm on Friday 10 June when the black BMW he was travelling in ended up on its side after crashing through concrete fencing on Standedge Road.

Miraculously a number of trees prevented the vehicle from rolling further down the embankment.

Oldham’s community ‘fruit route’ trees destroyed by vandals

A number of fruit trees that form part of Oldham’s community ‘fruit route’ have been destroyed by vandals last week in Grotton.

Oldham Council’s parks department say they are aware of the damage and are liaising with Greater Manchester Police who are also investigating.
