Canal passenger boats taken away for winter maintenance

Two passenger boats from the Marsden Visitors Centre in Marsden, were recently taken through the Standedge canal tunnel and along the Huddersfield Narrow Canal to Wool Road in Dobcross, in order for them to be lifted out of the water for repairs.

They were moved from Marsden due to the historic nature of that site which is unsuitable for crane use.

Police confirm Greenfield firearm incident was false alarm

Police have today told Saddleworth News that they have received new information over the report of a man seen with a firearm near to Greenfield Primary School on Tuesday afternoon.

After further enquiries they have now ascertained that the man was in fact a carpet fitter going about his normal business, and was mistakenly believed to have been carrying a firearm.

The school are keen to ensure that all parents are now aware of this fact.

Police investigate reports of man with a firearm near local primary school

Police were called to reports of a man with a firearm near a Saddleworth primary school yesterday afternoon.

Shortly before 2pm, police received a report that a man was sat in a car on Shaw Street in Greenfield, near to Greenfield Primary School, and that he had a firearm.

Police attended and after investigating, found no evidence of a man with a firearm.

Police have told us that no crimes have been submitted.

The Annual Horseman’s Carol Service will once again be being held at Friezland Arena (just off the A635) on Saturday 12 December 2015.

Council pays its respects to alderman and former mayor

Oldham Council has expressed sympathy following the death of an Honorary Alderman of the Borough and former Mayor.

Councillor Jack Armitage was the borough’s first citizen in the Mayoral year of 1975-76.

He served as a councillor from 1954 until 1995 and was awarded the title of Honorary Alderman in 1996 in recognition of his lengthy service to the council. He represented St Mary’s ward.

Borough to fall silent for Remembrance Sunday services

Oldham Council is honouring the fallen on Sunday, November 8.

Remembrance Sunday services will be taking place at venues across the borough, held in conjunction with branches of the Royal British Legion.
