Several people have been injured after an incident in Uppermill this afternoon.

It is thought a large group of people became involved in a disturbance in the village, leaving two men with head injuries.

Saddleworth in Bloom 2013

The judging of the Annual Saddleworth in Bloom competition will take place on Thursday 25th July 2013.

The panel of judges will include the Chairman of the Parish Council, Councillor Graham Sheldon and Gardening Expert Frank Ashton.

Horse rider injured after collision with car in Dobcross

Horse rider hit by car in Dobcross

A horse rider has been injured after a collision with a car in Dobcross.

The accident happened on Sugar Lane at around 4.30pm today.

It is believed that a car travelling from the village towards Diggle ran into the back of the horse on a blind bend.

The female rider was thrown off the horse into the road.

Police and paramedics attended and the injured rider was taken to hospital.

Resident voices concern over police 101 number wait

A Grasscroft man is claiming it took nearly forty minutes for police to establish which county he lived in after his wife called the 101 non emergency number.

Graham Snell, of Burnedge Lane had gone outside his house and spotted serious damage to his partner’s car. This had been caused by a passing van that had failed to stop.

Mr Snell asked his wife Tina to call the police 101 non emergency number.

Final works now underway at Churchill Playing Fields

Major works to improve Churchill playing fields – the largest in the Saddleworth and Lees area – are nearing completion.

The 7.8-hectare site has long-suffered from poor drainage that meant it regularly became waterlogged.

A new layout was also needed to increase the flexibility of the facilities and boost its availability for sports and events bookings.

Council Tax discount review to be carried out

Oldham Council is carrying out a review of Council Tax Single Person Discount.

This will confirm our records are up to date and ensure those households who are eligible to receive this discount will do so.

Currently across the Borough there are 34,492 households that are claiming the 25 per cent discount.

Rather than contacting every resident that claims the discount we are carrying out checks to make sure that the information we hold is up to date and accurate.

Dobcross Band and Social Club have two concerts coming up shortly.

On Sunday June 16 at 8pm, Oldham Music Centre adult community wind band will be playing at the club, there is an entrance fee of £3.00.

On Sunday 23 June at 8pm, there will be a Dobcross Whit Friday band contest presentation with a concert by Dobcross Youth Band.

Whole-life tariff for the killer of PC Nicola Hughes

Dale Cregan has been sentenced to a whole life tariff for the murder of PC Nicola Hughes of Saddleworth.

Cregan admitted killing PCs Fiona Bone and Nicola Hughes, father and son David and Mark Short and three attempted murders at Preston Crown Court.

Passing sentence, Mr Justice Holroyde QC said Cregan had had “a cold-blooded and ruthless determination to end the lives of PCs Bone and Hughes”.
