A nine-year-old girl from Saddleworth is being hailed as a hero by her friends and family after jumping into an ice cold canal to save a young boy from drowning.

Charity walk from Uppermill Civic Hall to raise money for COPS

Police will be taking part in a 110 mile charity walk across the Greater Manchester boundary in memory of PCs Nicola Hughes and Fiona Bone.

Saddleworth Parish Council expresses concern at the condition of Uppermill war memorial

The war memorial in Uppermill was a subject of concerned at this weeks meeting of Saddleworth Parish Council.

The memorial which stands in St Chad’s Gardens in Uppermill was damaged two years ago when an attempt was made to repaint the lettering and abortive attempts to remove excess paint resulted in serious erosion of the inscription. At the time there was widespread dismay at what had happened and Oldham Council officers pledged to rectify the damage.

Injured cyclist taken to hospital by air ambulance

An injured cyclist was airlifted to hospital today after an accident on moorland above Denshaw.

A spokesperson for the North West Air Ambulance told Saddleworth News: “A 19-year-old male cyclist was injured whilst out riding a mountain bike on the moors above Denshaw.

“He was airlifted to The Royal Oldham Hospital by air ambulance just after 12.00pm today.”

Re-decking work to be carried out on the twin timber bridges at Uppermill

Oldham Council is informing residents that re-decking work will be carried out on the twin timber bridges situated at Church Road and Station Road, Uppermill.

The work will begin on Tuesday, April 8 and will last for four weeks.

Any temporary road/lane closures affecting Church Road and Station Road/Shaw Lane will be included on the Council’s weekly road works bulletin: www.oldham.gov.uk/roadworks

Alternative route maps will be posted and maintained on site during the works.

A man who killed a two-year-old boy when he blew up his house has been jailed.

Andrew Partington (17/10/1984), formerly of Buckley Street, Shaw, admitted manslaughter and causing criminal damage (in excess of £1m).

At Manchester Crown Court today, Tuesday 19 February 2013, he was sentenced to 10 years in prison with a further five on licence.

DIY chain prosecuted after girl injured in Oldham store

Oldham Council has successfully prosecuted B&Q Plc for breaching health and safety regulations after a four-year-old girl was injured in one of their stores.

The incident happened in June 2011, when the child was with her parents and younger sister at the DIY chain’s branch on Westhulme Way, Oldham.
