A blocked culvert in Diggle is a major cause of surface water on the A62 Standedge Road

A major contributing factor for the large volumes of flood water that flow down the roads into Delph and Diggle during storms is a blocked culvert near to Brun clough reservoir at Diggle.

The rainwater always flowed from the moors naturally into this culvert, but in recent years it has become blocked and overgrown with subsidence blocking large sections of it.

Saddleworth and Lees District Partnership today held their annual Fun Day.

This year’s event – which took place at Dawson’s Field, Higher Turf Lane, Austerlands – saw residents getting into the Olympic spirit in the run up to the London Olympics 2012.

Saddleworth and Lees District Partnership are hosting their annual Fun Day this Thursday.

This year’s event – which takes place at Dawson’s Field, Higher Turf Lane, Austerlands – will see resident getting into the Olympic spirit in the run up to the London Olympics 2012.

The ‘Olympicnic’ will bring the community together for a great day of fun and games for all ages organised by Oldham Council’s Sports Development team as part of ‘Love Where You Live’.

Delph win a thriller

Delph won a thrilling match on Saturday against second in the table Elland, defending a relatively modest total. Elland won the toss and had no hesitation in putting Delph into bat on a wicket that was still drying out after the week’s heavy downpours.

Cricket camp at Saddleworth next week

The Cricket Asylum are running a cricket camp at Saddleworth next week and still have a few places left.

The course runs from Monday to Friday, 9am – 5pm and is £20 a day (Less than day care!).

Lancashire’s Luke Procter will be in attendance and there will be a chance for the kids to bowl and bat against him!

Delph & Dobcross reach the final of the Sykes Cup

Last Sunday, Delph reached the final of the Huddersfield League RomidaSykes Cup with a solid team performance against table topping Hoylandswaine.

Putting Hoylandswaine into bat, Adnan Ghaus struck in his first over by clean bowling Alan Mynett for a duck. Alan Morris soon followed, caught at slip, and when Warren Jones took a stunning one handed diving catch to remove skipper John Sadler, Delph were firmly in the driving seat.

Two men rescued after falling down shaft in Oldham

Two men have been rescued after falling 50ft down a new build sewer shaft in Oldham town centre this morning.

We are not sure how they came to end up in the shaft on Union Street but they were rescued by Greater Manchester Fire Service and Oldham Mountain Rescue Team.

A major new conservation partnership project in the Peak District has appointed a countryside landscape professional to help make more space for wildlife and people in the Dark Peak.

Oldham Council to campaign for ‘fare’ deal on the buses

Oldham Council has adopted a resolution to campaign for a fairer deal for local residents on bus fares.

The motion, proposed by Councillor Sean Fielding and seconded by Councillor Eddie Moores, was unanimously adopted at a meeting of Full Council on July 11th.

It highlights concern about the bus fares which local residents are paying in comparison to those in other parts of the Greater Manchester region.

Some breathtaking pictures of last weeks floods have been given to Saddleworth News.

These were taken during the heavy rain last Friday, and show a ferocious amount of water coming down the cascade at Ashway in Greenfield.

Old Town Hall consultation report now online

A report detailing the findings of a recent consultation event about the future of the Old Town Hall is now available online.

Hundreds of residents attended the event held inside the Grade II-listed building last month and the consultation period ended on June 12.

Visitors viewed information board and artists’ impressions in the Egyptian Room – opened to the public for the first time since the 1990s – and were able to give their views and quiz officers.
