Family’s Tribute To Man Killed On Whit Friday

Relatives of the man who died after he was run over by a coach in Greenfield on Whit Friday have described him as “irreplaceable.” Alan Chamberlain, who was 57, was hit by the vehicle at about 10pm, and passed away in hospital the following morning.

Mr Chamberlain lived in Hyde, although he was born in Mossley and spent most of his life there. His eight-year-old son Zac, who was also hit by the coach, is recovering from serious bruises.

New Bin Collections To Begin

Oldham Council’s new regime of bin collections takes effect tomorrow. The main change is that, from now on, residents will be able to recycle their food and garden waste together.

Householders can now either put their food waste caddy or their green garden bin out every week, but not both. An information pack has been delivered to all homes with further details.

Councillor’s Concern Over Delph Playground

A member of Saddleworth Parish Council has expressed concern about the state of the newly-opened Swan Meadow playground in Delph. Ken Hulme, an independent councillor who is based in the village, has said a broken sewage pipe nearby is causing a health hazard, and is also worried about vandalism at the site.

Whit Friday Success For Hepworth, Brighouse And Rastrick

The Oldham (Lees) Band in action during the Dobcross contest. The Rothwell Temperance Band took the top prize.

West Yorkshire bands took the top three places in the Saddleworth Whit Friday brass band contests. Hepworth narrowly beat Brighouse and Rastrick in the overall rankings, with Rothwell Temperance third.

Hepworth won three of the individual contests, at Denshaw, Greenacres and Lees and Springhead. They never finished lower than fourth elsewhere to take the title.

Tragedy Overshadows Whit Friday

A man died and his son was injured when they were run over by a coach in Greenfield on Whit Friday. The tragedy happened during the closing stages of the brass band contest in the village, at about 10pm.

According to reports, both the 57-year-old man and his son, who’s 8, were trapped under the vehicle. Both were freed and taken to hospital, where the man sadly died early on Saturday. His son suffered serious bruises.

Turning Warmer

The weather will steadily improve over the next few days, with bright sunshine and warm temperatures expected by the end of the week.

The rest of today should be cloudy but dry with some sunny spells and highs of 16C. That cloud should make for another relatively mild evening, with temperatures not falling below 10C overnight.

Comedy Night To End Festival

This weekend’s Oldham Festival comes to an end tonight, and the final event takes place in Greenfield. The Off The Rails comedy club is celebrating its eight anniversary and this evening’s event is an official part of the festival fringe.

Tonight’s bill features Canadian surrealist Tony Law, quirky Markus Birdman and Oldham’s Alex Boardman. It’s at the Royal George pub on Manchester Road, and tickets are £7 (£5 concessions), with doors opening at 7:30pm.

“Meet The Ancestors” In Delph

Anyone with an interest in the history of Saddleworth and Delph in particular is invited to the graveyard of the Independent Church in the village tomorrow afternoon. Volunteers will be recording the details and taking photographs of the gravestones and other monuments there.

More Brass This Weekend

If yesterday’s Whit Friday contests weren’t enough for you, there are plenty more opportunities to hear brass bands around Saddleworth this weekend.

Later this morning the Fulham band will be playing a free concert at Grains Bar, starting at 11am. They’ve made the long trip north from London for the weekend, and say they want to make the most of their time here.

Beer Walk Today

The Saddleworth Beer Walk takes place today. It’s the 37th time drinkers have taken part in the annual event to raise money for charity.

Last year, the walkers themselves raised more than £80,000, with organisers the Saddleworth Round Table bringing in a further £31,000. The Round Table distributes the cash to various charities throughout the year.
