Lydgate House Restoration Approved

A listed building in Lydgate which partly collapsed 12 years ago is going to be restored. Pensioner Sally Jackson was killed as she slept when the roof of Lydgate House on Stockport Road fell in, and the building has remained derelict ever since.

Oldham Council’s planning committee this week approved plans to turn both the main house and the associated old smithy into two properties, along with three garages. As part of the development some outbuildings at the rear of […]

Tributes Paid To Former Councillor

Parish councillors have paid tribute to the late Brian Mather, who represented the old Saddleworth East ward on Oldham Council for 20 years. Mr Mather passed away earlier this month at the age of 74, following a battle with stomach cancer.

Unsettled Weather On The Way

After the mild and dry weather of the last few days, showers will return this weekend and it’ll feel a bit cooler.

Today starts gloomy with some drizzle around, although much of this should clear away by the afternoon meaning we ought to enjoy a few sunny spells. Top temperatures will be 14C, so a few degrees down on what we’ve had for the last few days.

Tomorrow likely to be more of the same, with outbreaks of rain during […]

Woolas Defends Brown Over Bigot Gaffe

Phil Woolas has defended Gordon Brown after the Prime Minister referred to a woman he’d just met on a Rochdale street as “bigoted” in an unguarded comment. The Labour candidate for Oldham East and Saddleworth went on BBC Newsnight to say his party leader “does genuinely regret” the remark.

The PM had been in Oldham earlier in the day, and appeared with Mr Woolas at a campaign event at the Honeywell Centre. Mr Woolas, fighting hard to be re-elected […]

Poll Boost For Liberal Democrats

A new opinion poll carried out in marginal constituencies suggests the Liberal Democrats are doing well at Labour’s expense, and could gain the Oldham East and Saddleworth seat. The ICM survey in the Guardian even raises the prospect of the Lib Dems taking Colne Valley, despite finishing third there at the last general election.

The poll was carried out in constituencies where the Lib Dems are challenging to win. The results hint that Lib Dem support is growing more strongly […]

Concern Over Cost Of Civic Hall Extension

Uppermill Civic Hall. The planned extension would be round the back.

Plans for an extension to Uppermill Civic Hall seem certain to be scaled back, after concerns were again raised about the possible cost of the work. The new plans […]
