The Saddleworth News Photography Awards 2017 looking to frame a Saddleworth Summer

Reporter: Stuart Littleford

Photographers of all ages and abilities are invited to enter their photographs of Saddleworth into the Saddleworth News Photography Awards 2017 which start today.

The awards are a Saddleworth News Community Project in partnership with the Saddleworth Photography Group, which has been operational for over two years and has over 220 members.

The group set weekly practical challenges to help photographers learn from their own practice and from that of others. The group also provides a sounding board for its members to ask questions and give feedback.

They were also honoured to be asked to exhibit in the Civic Hall, home of the Saddleworth Parish Council, this exhibition can be seen at least until December 2017. More information about the group can be found at:

The theme of these first awards will be ‘Saddleworth in Summer’ and the emphasis will be on capturing not just the beauty of the area but also the spirit of the local community in the Summertime.

From a family picnic in a park to a tradesman painting a door, a policeman directing traffic or a herd of cows grazing in a field – whatever you feel best captures Saddleworth in Summer.

The judges will initially choose the best ten photographs and later on choose the final three for a winner to be decided by a public vote on Saddleworth News.

Broadcaster and journalist John Stapleton will be joining the judges at the second stage of voting to help choose the final three.

A special presentation night will be held at the Reclamation Room shop and cafe on Lee Street in Uppermill with an exhibition of the final ten photographs including the award winners as chosen by the judges. The first place winner will be given a Gold Award certificate and be presented with a brand new tripod worth £70 from our main sponsor the Pennine Photographic and Binocular Centre in Rochdale.

Second and third place winners will receive Silver and Bronze Award certificates and discount vouchers.

There will be a maximum of three images per entry and these should be sent to:

The closing date for entries is August 28 2017 with judges selecting the final three photographs for public voting a week later.

Full information on how to enter the awards can be found on the Saddleworth News website along with the full terms and conditions: Saddleworth News Photographic Awards
