Paul and Connie run The Red Lion Pub in Lees. They have recently refurbished it and want to let sports lovers in the area know what they do. Over a coffee, we chatted with the owner:
Tell us a little more about who you are
I’m Paul. Mum, Connie, took over the Red Lion in 2008. I came into the business in 2012. I’m in charge of the bars and Mum’s in charge of the kitchen. After the refurb. in July, we’ve been really busy. We’re getting a lot of people coming in that we’ve never seen before and they’re coming back, so must be enjoying it. It’s good for the area as Lees needs a boost.
What does your pub offer?
We offer sports and food. We show everything on our big TVs from Rugby to Tennis to Football. We’re also a weekend venue, people come in for a good night out. It’s also busy during the day time as people come in for food and to watch the sports.
Tell us about your food
Burgers, chicken wings, hot dogs, American basket kind of food, eat it with your fingers food. It’s all home cooked food. We’ve run the menu for a couple of months now and found out what people like and don’t like now. We serve food every day 12-8pm, and on the weekend we start food at 10 am til 8pm. At the weekend we serve breakfasts. They go down well. The breakfast are basically your full monty: sausage, bacon, eggs, Portobello mushrooms, hash browns, tomatoes. See the menu below.
The Sports channels are on the TV all the time, when a big match is on the sound comes on rather than the background music. We’ve got 2 different rooms so if people don’t want to listen to the commentary they can go into the tap room where we just have background music and the live TV muted.
Plans for the coming year
We’re looking at refurbishing our function room upstairs for functions and parties.
What sets you apart from others?
Sports/Food combination is our thing. We are the place to come to watch any live sports!
