Support needed from generous businesses to keep the Rushcart rolling

Last year’s Saddleworth Rushcart

Reporter: Stuart Littleford

Saddleworth Morris Men are asking kind-hearted businesses to take up advertising space in the Rushcart programme so that the money raised can go towards Cart repairs and traffic management costs.

The body of the Cart was built in 2004, with the wheels from the previous one kept in service but heavily rebuilt in 2010. Due to their use since the first Rushcart, the wooden rims are now being replaced by third generation […]

Here are some excellent pictures of Sunday’s action at last weekend’s Saddleworth Rushcart. They’ve been sent in to Saddleworth News by Andrew Schofield of the Northwest Sports Online Photographic Agency, and are reproduced here with his permission.

On Sunday morning, the morris men moved the rushcart from Uppermill up to St Chad’s, where the traditional rushbearing took place. The ceremony involves the placing of the rushes on the church floor, to act […]

Videos Of Saddleworth Rushcart Dance In Uppermill

The Saddleworth Rushcart weekend began on Saturday morning in Uppermill Square. The Saddleworth Morris Men moved the cart from behind the Commercial, where it had been constructed, into the High Street, before performing their Rushcart dance.

I took the video above from my vantage point, peering over the crowd lining the street from one of the nearby benches. Later, Twitter user Alcofrolicchap (read his blog here) sent in a link to a video taken from a better angle, and […]

Saddleworth Rushcart At The Navigation In Dobcross

If you weren’t able to catch any of the Saddleworth Rushcart festival over the weekend, here’s another video instalment if what you missed. This clip shows the rushcart as it travelled down Wool Road to The Navigation in Dobcross, late on Saturday afternoon.

The cart, with Eddie Worrall on board as the jockey, had already been on a tour of villages throughout the day, taking in Uppermill, Greenfield and Delph, as well as Dobcross Square. With dancing at each […]

Saddleworth Rushcart Weekend Begins In Uppermill

The annual festival of rushbearing started in Uppermill on Saturday morning in a blaze of colour, as the Saddleworth Morris Men performed in the Square outside the Commercial.

Then, to the sounds of cheering from the crowd lining the High Street and the jangling of dozens of shoes, morris dancers from around the country helped lead the rushcart towards Greenfield, as the tour of the villages began.

Timings For Saddleworth Rushcart Weekend

The Saddleworth Morris Men in Dobcross Square on Good Friday.

The major Saddleworth events are coming thick and fast. We’ve barely recovered from Yanks last weekend, and it’s already time for another summer highlight, the Saddleworth Rushcart.

As usual, the Saddleworth Morris Men will be appearing with the Rushcart around the villages throughout Saturday, before moving it up to the Church Inn above Uppermill for another packed day of events on Sunday.

If you’d like to see the Rushcart […]

Morris Men Brighten Up Soggy Saddleworth Show

Despite the dreadful weather, local people did their best to have a good time at the Saddleworth Show. The driving rain barely let up all day, but there was still much to enjoy for those who did venture along to Churchill Fields.

As ever, the Saddleworth Morris Men were in colourful form, even though their musicians had to play with plastic bags over their instruments. You can watch a video of them in action by clicking on the box […]

The Saddleworth Morris Men enjoyed a busy weekend as the annual Rushcart Festival took place. The sun shone as they toured Uppermill, Delph, Dobcross and Greenfield on Saturday, before Sunday’s day of activities at St Chad’s Church above Uppermill.

On Saturday, the so-called ‘jockey’ of the cart Dave Wilde tottered on the top as the craft was pulled around the villages, and his Morris Men colleagues entertained the […]
