The Moors for the Future Partnership, which works to protect priority international habitats in the Peak District and South Pennines, has received 16 million euros to deliver the MoorLIFE 2020 project.

This includes €12 million from the EU’s LIFE fund – which supports environmental, nature conservation and climate action projects throughout Europe – the largest award ever given to a UK-based project.

Firefighters are tackling a large moorland fire above Uppermill and Greenfield this afternoon.

The fire started at around 2.00pm and quickly spread across dry moorland from Greenfield towards Uppermill.

Twenty-five firefighters and five appliances are currently at the scene along with an incident command unit. They are being assisted by Oldham Mountain Rescue Team, the RSPB and the National Trust.

It’s a time of celebration at Dove Stone as surveys reveal fantastic results for rare moorland birds and endangered wildlife – thanks to blanket bog restoration work.

Positive results for birds, such as golden plover and dunlin, and other wildlife like the water vole have been recorded in surveys, funded by Grantscapes (part of the landfill tax credit scheme), and carried out by the RSPB at Dove Stone.

A section of the perimeter footpath around Dove Stone Reservoir will close for up to six weeks on Monday, so engineers can lay a new water main.
