News that the electrification of the rail line through Saddleworth has been delayed indefinitely will mean further misery for local commuters who regularly use Greenfield and Mossley stations.

The work would have seen the line electrified between York and Manchester over the next two years helping to reduce the number of overcrowded trains.

Bones Found At Friezland Thought To Be Animal

Police were called to Friezland this afternoon after some bones were discovered near the railway line. It’s not thought they were human.

The bones were found by a man out walking his dog at about 2pm. He said he guessed the bones probably belonged to an animal, but called British Transport Police so they could investigate.

Saddleworth Reaction To The Budget

Local politicians and business leaders have been giving their views on today’s Budget, delivered by Chancellor George Osborne.

Mr Osborne announced a cut in fuel duty of 1p per litre, paid for by extra taxes on North Sea oil companies. He also confirmed an increase in the personal tax allowance, a new shared-equity scheme to help more first-time buyers, and a larger than expected cut in corporation tax.
