These dramatic pictures highlight the fury and frustration of farmers and conservationists battling to protect a major beauty spot.

James Crowther, whose the family have farmed 5,000 acres of rugged moorland for generations, tackled the blaze with student Luke Harrison assisted by an elderly neighbour.

Saddleworth Parish Council Proposes South Pennines Constituency

Saddleworth Parish Council has decided to oppose plans to include our area in an expanded Oldham and Saddleworth constituency for Westminster elections.

Instead, parish councillors are calling for the creation of a new South Pennines constituency including Littleborough, Milnrow, Newhey, Mossley and Stalybridge along with Saddleworth and Lees.

Newhey To Denshaw Road Closed At Newhey

The A640 Huddersfield Road is to remain closed at Newhey for up to three weeks. Rochdale Council has confirmed the closure following last Wednesday’s accident involving a piledriver.

The machine was taking part in work to repair a retaining wall, when the road beneath it partly gave way. The wall also collapsed in the incident, which led to an emergency closure of the road between Newhey and Denshaw for several hours.

Machine Causes Road To Give Way In Newhey

The A640 Huddersfield Road between Newhey and Denshaw was closed for several hours this afternoon and evening, after it partly gave way under the weight of a heavy piece of construction machinery.

According to the police, the piledriver, described as being 50 tonnes, slipped slightly towards the side of the road in Newhey at about 4:30pm. A nearby wall collapsed.

A police spokeswoman said the road would be shut for a “considerable amount of time” while the machine was recovered. […]

Would You Use A Bus From Denshaw To Newhey?

The idea of restoring a bus service between Denshaw and Newhey has been mooted by a local member of Saddleworth Parish Council.

Cllr Ken Hulme, who represents Delph and Denshaw as an independent, wants to see if there’s any interest in such a service, to tie in with the extension of the Metrolink to Newhey.
