Here are some pictures from Marsden Cuckoo Day, which brought hundreds of visitors to the village on Saturday. The festival, which is held every year to mark the start of spring, featured activities and entertainment including dancers, brass bands, a duck race and a procession up Peel Street.

The annual Marsden Cuckoo Festival begins tomorrow night. The event marks the beginning of spring and summer in these parts, and is a long-standing tradition.

Tomorrow evening there’ll be a Catch the Cuckoo Walk organised by the National Trust, which leaves the Mechanics Hall at 7pm. Over at the Liberal Club, a folk night featuring local musicials begins at 8:30pm.

Pontin’s Success For Uppermill And Marsden

The brass bands of Uppermill and Marsden both enjoyed success last weekend at the Pontin’s Championships, held at the holiday camp at Prestatyn in north Wales. Uppermill won the Third Section, with the Marsden Silver Band claiming overall victory in the Harry and Margaret Mortimer Championship.

Whit Friday Success For Hepworth, Brighouse And Rastrick

West Yorkshire bands took the top three places in the Saddleworth Whit Friday brass band contests. Hepworth narrowly beat Brighouse and Rastrick in the overall rankings, with Rothwell Temperance third.

Hepworth won three of the individual contests, at Denshaw, Greenacres and Lees and Springhead. They never finished lower than fourth elsewhere to take the title.
