Lees Community Film Project

Residents of Lees and nearby places, including Springhead, are being asked for their memories of the area for a new community film project, which has been commissioned by Oldham’s libraries.

Parish Council Discusses Prospect Of More Powers

The notion of more power being devolved to Saddleworth by both Oldham Council and the national government was debated by parish councillors this week.

During Monday night’s regular monthly meeting, they discussed a resolution proposed by the four Independent members, which suggested inviting Oldham Council officials to discuss the new Labour administration’s plans for so-called District Town Halls.

Café To Open Inside Brownhill Centre

The Brownhill Centre.

Part of the Brownhill Countryside Centre on the Huddersfield Narrow Canal is to become a café.

Oldham Council has put some of the building, which is at the Wool Road roundabout between Uppermill and Dobcross, up for lease with an asking price of £6,500 per year.

It’s one of four similar offers being made by the council. The others are at Gallery Oldham, Failsworth Library, and Higher Crompton Park.

The office of Oldham East and Saddleworth MP Debbie Abrahams has been in touch to confirm the dates for her next series of constituency surgeries.

She’ll be at Uppermill Civic Hall on Saturday 16 July between 10am and 11am. It’s a drop-in surgery so you don’t have to book an appointment in advance, although you can do if you wish.

Half-Term Activities From Go! Oldham

The schools break up for a week’s half-term holiday tomorrow, and Oldham Council has various activities planned to keep youngsters occupied throughout the borough.

Cricket, tennis and volleyball are all on offer at Saddleworth School, and Oldham Athletic are running both a football school and some street dancing classes. There are also all kinds of activities scheduled at venues including Gallery Oldham, the Coliseum and Oldham Library.

Uppermill Writers’ Group Looks For New Members

Uppermill Writers’ Group is appealing for new members to join. The group is for anyone who is interested in creative writing, whether you’ve been published or not.

According to Oldham Council, the group provides a platform to discuss your own work, and share and develop ideas with other like-minded writers.

The group meets at the library in Uppermill on the first Wednesday of every month, between 2pm and 3pm. The next meeting is this coming Wednesday, that’s 4 May.

Teenagers Pack Library For Battle Of The Bands

More than 150 teenagers were in the somewhat unusual surroundings of Oldham Library on Saturday night for a Battle of the Bands. Local youngsters got up on stage to perform under the watchful eye of judge Jonny Brown from top Oldham band Twisted Wheel, who began the evening by performing an acoustic set.

Council Offers Help With Census Forms

Census forms began arriving at homes in our area yesterday, and Oldham Council has promised to offer help to anyone who needs assistance filling them out. A series of events will be held at libraries, so staff can deal with any questions residents might have.

The official date for the census is Sunday 27 March, so the forms should only be filled out on or after that.

Entries Wanted For Battle Of The Bands

Oldham’s Battle of the Bands is coming up later this month, and local musicians aged 21 and under are being asked to enter. Solo artists, duos and bands alike are all welcome to take part.

New Information Point At Lees Library

A new information point for local residents has opened at the library in Lees. It’s aimed at giving people a better idea of what council services are available in their area.
