Saddleworth Musical Society present cheque to Dr Kershaws

December 11 2016 saw Saddleworth Musical Society perform their annual Christmas concert, featuring the children of Diggle school choir.

This annual performance raises monies for selected charities which this year was Dr Kershaw’s Hospice.

The total sum raised was £1000.00 and here we see Gerard Marsden from Saddleworth Musical Society present the cheque to Joanne Sloan from Dr Kershaw’s, ably assisted by, Grace Wallace, Martha King, Thomas Wallace and Toby King from Diggle school.

Local climber to host Above & Beyond awards

An iconic guest of honour is to present Saddleworth’s first-ever Above & Beyond Awards later this year.

Unassuming Paul Braithwaite from Delph played a major role in the successful ascent of Everest South West Face in 1975 with a host of other major mountaineering conquests over a lifetime career.

He has climbed in the most extreme and remote regions of the world, including The Arctic, Canada, Alaska, South America, Russia, Nepal, Africa and Tibet.

Award scheme launched to recognise local community helpers

A unique award scheme which will recognise villagers who go the extra mile for neighbours or their community has been launched across Saddleworth.

The Above and Beyond Awards will celebrate men, women and children nominated by village community, resident associations and groups.

And in a bid to encourage nominations villagers are being urged to contact their own community’s committee.

All ten village committees have backed the novel award scheme which is the brainchild of journalist Ken Bennett.

Saddleworth journalist honoured with lifetime achievement award

Distinguished Saddleworth journalist Ken Bennett has been honoured with a lifetime achievement award by Liverpool Press Club, recognising a 60-year career in the profession.

Ken, who lives in Dobcross, started at a St Helens weekly newspaper as a junior reporter, aged 15, before joining a freelance news agency working for national media.

Dobcross residents invited to public meeting over village traffic issues

All Dobcross residents are invited to a public meeting in the village Band Club on Tuesday, July 28 at 7.30pm.

The meeting, has been organised by Dobcross Village Community executive committee, to discuss increased traffic through the village. Residents can attend and air their views on safety, speed, and how to discouraging traffic from using the village roads as a ‘rat run’.
