A fascinating exhibition has launched at Gallery Oldham celebrating Oldham’s proud industrial past.

In 1865 Godai Tomoatsu, a student from the western Japanese island of Kyushu and agent of the Prince of Satsuma, secretly came to Oldham. At the time Oldham was the world’s greatest cotton mill town.

The latest exhibition at Gallery Oldham explores the facts and legends around the brutal sport of clog fighting.

In these contests working men would engage in man-on-man combat, kicking unprotected shins with their heavy clogs.

‘Purring – Sport of the People’ opens on January 9 and is the result of research by artist Anna FC Smith who has spent time talking to residents and researching the subject in the Oldham Local Studies and Archives.

Saddleworth photographer develops some interesting shots with huge vintage camera

A Saddleworth photographer has brought a giant piece of the borough’s manufacturing heritage back into use after finding it in the stores of Gallery Oldham.

Over the last two years Ian Beesley has been working with the gallery as an artist in residence and has developed an interest in the pieces contained in its collections.

While poring over the many items his well trained eye was caught by a large Hunter Penrose industrial process camera.

Gallery Oldham: Take a walk through 200 years of Union Street

Gallery Oldham’s latest exhibition explores the history of one of the town centre’s busiest thoroughfares – Union Street.

The street was first laid out in the early 1800s as an unpaved dirt road through fields on the edge of town.

This quiet country lane was intended as a by-pass for horse-drawn carriages that wanted to avoid the existing steep and narrow route through Oldham town centre.

Half-Term Activities From Go! Oldham

The schools break up for a week’s half-term holiday tomorrow, and Oldham Council has various activities planned to keep youngsters occupied throughout the borough.

Cricket, tennis and volleyball are all on offer at Saddleworth School, and Oldham Athletic are running both a football school and some street dancing classes. There are also all kinds of activities scheduled at venues including Gallery Oldham, the Coliseum and Oldham Library.

Social Media Workshop For Local Groups

Artists and community groups interested in improving their presence on social media sites such as Facebook and Twitter are being invited to a free seminar at Gallery Oldham this coming Monday 16 May.

The social media workshop is aimed at helping creative people use social media to reach new audiences. The evening is being run by Manchester agency Real Fresh TV, and runs from 6pm to 8:30pm.
