Art Exhibition At Friezland Church

The next art exhibition at Friezland Parish Church on Church Road takes place this weekend, that’s 10 and 11 September.

There’ll be paintings by several local artists on display. Also, because it’s National Heritage Weekend, church records, registers and graveyard plans will also be available for people to view.

The exhibition will be open between 10am and 4pm on Saturday, and from 12 noon to 4pm on Sunday.

Friezland Special Care Fun Day Raises £800

Friezland couple Kevin and Victoria Fitzpatrick have thanked everyone who helped with their fundraiser at the village’s church hall last month.

The event, in aid of the Royal Oldham Hospital’s In Your Hands appeal, brought in £800. Kevin said they were “dead chuffed” with the response.

Success For Coast To Coast Challenge Cyclists

Six cyclists from Saddleworth have successfully completed a ride from coast to coast, in aid of the Uppermill-based Oldham Mountain Rescue Team.

Jonny Eglin from Friezland, Adey Bennett from Greenfield, Andy Hill of Diggle, and three riders who live in Uppermill, Ian Kelly, Duncan Spellman and Nick Hodgson, took on the 210-mile challenge from the Lakes to Whitby.

Special Care Fun Day In Friezland This Saturday

A Friezland family have organised a fundraiser for the Royal Oldham Hospital’s neo-natal unit after it saved their daughter’s life.

Amelie Fitzpatrick spent five days in the unit in September last year and, as she approaches her first birthday, her parents Victoria and Kevin have arranged the fun day to raise money for the In Your Hands appeal.

Coast To Coast Challenge In Aid Of Oldham Mountain Rescue

A group of intrepid local cyclists are taking on a gruelling challenge in aid of the Uppermill-based Oldham Mountain Rescue Team later this month.

Six Saddleworth riders are planning to travel the 210 miles of Wainwright’s Coast to Coast route, from the Lakes to Whitby, using nearby cycling routes.

Saddleworth Schools Close As Teachers Strike

Schools across Saddleworth have either closed entirely or partly to pupils, as teachers take part in a national strike as part of a row over public sector pensions.

This was the scene outside St Mary’s Primary in Greenfield this morning, after someone put up a banner opposing the industrial action. The picture was sent in by a Saddleworth News reader.

The timings and adjudicators have been revealed for this year’s Whit Friday band contests, which will take place on 17 June.

Because the contests fall almost on the longest day, some of the events will be going on a little later than usual, with the Scouthead and Austerlands contest not scheduled to finish until 11pm.

Unsafe Tree Leads To Greenfield Road Chaos

Drivers trying to get from Oldham to Saddleworth faced long delays during the evening rush hour, after police received a report that a tree behind the Farrars Arms in Greenfield could topple over at any moment.

Officers closed Oldham Road near the junction with Mossley Road, while a tree surgeon attended the scene to deal with the precarious tree, described as being between 70 and 80 feet high.
