Wading birds gathered in record numbers at our beloved nature spot Dovestone Reservoir this breeding season, thanks to an ambitious ongoing bog restoration programme.

Over the summer, RSPB staff and volunteer surveyors recorded 49 pairs of dunlins at the Saddleworth site, up a quarter from the 39 pairs observed in 2014 and up five pairs on last year’s previous record of 44.

These dramatic pictures highlight the fury and frustration of farmers and conservationists battling to protect a major beauty spot.

James Crowther, whose the family have farmed 5,000 acres of rugged moorland for generations, tackled the blaze with student Luke Harrison assisted by an elderly neighbour.

It was the second fire, believed to have been started by children, which caused chaos on hillsides above Greenfield on Saturday.

Officers who have worked tirelessly around the clock for the past 13 months, were today able to name the man whose body was discovered at the Dovestone area of Saddleworth in December of 2015.

Emergency planning exercise to take place in Greenfield next week

Police appeal for information after man found dead near Dovestone Reservoir at Greenfield

Police are trying to identify a man who was found dead near Dovestone Reservoir at Greenfield.

On Saturday 12 December 2015, the body of the man was found on the Chew track leading from Dovestones Reservoir boating lake to Indians Head.

He is described as being white, of slim build, had a receding hairline with grey hair to the side and back, had a large nose which may have been previously broken and was clean shaven.

Detectives launch fresh appeal for information about Craig Wilcox murder

Detectives investigating the murder of Craig Wilcox have launched a fresh appeal on the anniversary of his death.

Craig was last seen just over a year ago on 6 January 2014, at the home of relatives on Norfolk Crescent in Failsworth.

His parents reported him missing and an investigation was launched by detectives in Oldham. The investigation established Craig had confided in a friend to say he feared for his safety.

A large grass fire has been burning on moorland above Dovestone in Greenfield for the last few hours.

There are also three smaller blazes on the surrounding moorland.

The fire is still continuing to burn but Greater Manchester Fire & Rescue Service have told Saddleworth News they are aware of the fire.

Cannabis poisoning warning for Greenfield dog walkers

Dog walkers are being urged to take extra care whilst walking their dogs around the Dovestone Reservoir and Tanners Mill areas of Greenfield, after a number of dogs have suffered cannabis poisoning.
