These dramatic pictures highlight the fury and frustration of farmers and conservationists battling to protect a major beauty spot.

James Crowther, whose the family have farmed 5,000 acres of rugged moorland for generations, tackled the blaze with student Luke Harrison assisted by an elderly neighbour.

Armed police units have been drafted into Saddleworth to assist local police officers who are working to combat soaring domestic burglaries.

Flytipper who dumped waste in Saddleworth fined following airport arrest

Oldham Council has successfully prosecuted a flytipper after he was arrested at Manchester Airport.

On September 23 last year a resident contacted the council and reported waste had been dumped at the Windy Hill radio mast, Saddleworth.

Following an investigation by Environmental Health Officers the waste was traced to Ciprian Sorica, 22 of Camberwell Street and ABS Properties, of Tamworth Street Oldham.

The M62 near Saddleworth has now fully reopened following this morning’s serious collision between Oldham and Rochdale.

Both carriageways of the motorway between junction 20 and Oldham and junction 21 at Milnrow were closed at around 9.35am earlier today after police received a number of reports of a collision just before junction 21 of the M62.

Police are appealing for witnesses after a man was left with life threatening head injuries after a traffic collision in Saddleworth.

Shortly before 2.40am yesterday, a 24-year-old man was driving a white BMW along Ripponden Road in Denshaw towards the M62 motorway, when he came up to a left hand bend and lost control of the car.

Denshaw village switched on its Christmas lights last night with a good-sized crowd gathered on Huddersfield Road to watch the event.

The event was organised by Paula Parlsow and Denshaw Village Community Association, with support from the Rotary Club of Saddleworth and other local organisations.
