Heritage Lottery Fund backs new bid to unlock secrets of Saddleworth’s Roman outpost

A Saddleworth heritage group has been awarded a major grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund to support its research into the area’s Roman history. The Friends of Castleshaw Roman Forts have been given £70,100 to carry out a fresh excavation of the site, an officially scheduled monument of national importance.

Hundreds of schoolchildren and adult volunteers will take part in the dig which is due to begin in July 2014 and is expected to take up to 4 weeks.

The fire at a house in Castleshaw, Delph, is still burning late tonight.

The fire service have been relaying water to the burning building from over a mile away and filling up appliances on a rotational basis to deal with the blaze.

We have no further information at this point and more fire engines are arriving at the scene including specialist vehicles, roads around that area are closed to traffic.

Two people were injured in Thursday afternoon’s crash on the A62 Huddersfield Road above Diggle.

The smash happened not far from the old Floating Light pub, just before 5pm.

According to a spokesman for Greater Manchester Police, the two vehicles involved were an Audi and a BMW.

Crash Closes A62 Huddersfield Road Above Diggle

At least two vehicles were involved in a crash on the A62 Huddersfield Road on Thursday afternoon.

The incident happened shortly before 5pm, not too far from the old Floating Light pub above Diggle.

A spokeswoman for Greater Manchester Police said that “two, possibly three” vehicles were caught up in the smash. No information about casualties was immediately available.

Archaeologists are keen to hear the views of local people about one of Saddleworth’s most important monuments, Castleshaw Roman Fort.

Northern Archaeological Associates have been commissioned to prepare a conservation plan for the site, in the Castleshaw Valley above Delph.

They’ve prepared a questionnaire, and the responses will help them make recommendations about how the fort should be managed in the future.

Call-Outs For Mountain Rescue Team

The Oldham Mountain Rescue Team has been called out to help two injured people in Saddleworth over the past couple of days.

The rescuers, who are based at the Cross Keys above Uppermill, were asked to assist the North West Air Ambulance and the police.

In one incident, a cyclist suffered head injuries after coming off his bike at Blea Green, which is on the moors above the two Castleshaw reservoirs.
