More Videos Of Whit Friday In Dobcross

Videos of bands marching down Platt Lane to the Whit Friday contest in Dobcross have been posted on YouTube by local man Steve Sankey.

You can click on the box above to see the Wardle School Band, from Wardle near Rochdale, who delighted the crowd by turning out dressed as Mickey and Minnie Mouse.

Below, I’ve also embedded Steve’s videos of the Leyland Band, who were placed second behind Brighouse and Rastrick in the overall Dobcross results, and the […]

Here are some brilliant night-time images taken during the closing stages of Friday night’s band contest in Dobcross.

The Dobcross Silver Band got a tremendous reception from their home crowd as they entered Church Fields to close the contest. They performed Mephistopheles as their test piece, before leading the villagers in a rendition of the hymn The Day Thou Gavest.

Whit Friday Tribute To Killed Greenfield Spectator

The man who died after he was hit by a coach in Greenfield on Whit Friday last year has been remembered in a moving tribute at the spot where the tragedy happened.

Alan Chamberlain was knocked over on Chew Valley Road while attending the 2010 band contest, and his young son was injured. The incident led to a series of new safety measures across all of the contests this year.

On Friday, before performing at the contest, national and […]

Video Of Brighouse And Rastrick At Dobcross

Here’s the display which won Brighouse and Rastrick the Whit Friday band contest in Dobcross. Their version of Knight Templar was judged the best of the 57 performances during the six-hour competition at Church Fields.

Leyland, who played much later in the evening, were ranked second, with the Marsden Silver band third. That was also enough to secure Marsden the prize for best local band. Diggle, who opened the contest shortly before 4:30pm, were named the top Saddleworth performers.

Brass Bands Tune Up For Whit Friday Showdown

Saddleworth News has made its Guardian debut! Here’s an article which I’ve written about Whit Friday, which has been published on the Northerner section of the Guardian website here.

The Northerner is a new(ish) innovation, and carries articles about all kinds of things from across the north of England. It’s well worth bookmarking if you haven’t already seen it. Anyway, here’s the article:

IT’S WHIT FRIDAY tomorrow. Once part […]

Laura Helps Brighouse And Rastrick To Yorkshire Title

Delph’s own Laura Hirst helped the Brighouse and Rastrick band retain their Yorkshire title in Bradford last night.

The reigning national champions had already pre-qualified for the National Brass Band Championships at the Royal Albert Hall in October, but their superb victory at the St George’s Hall will raise hopes of a second Yorkshire/National double in succession.

Last year, Laura, who plays the cornet, became the first female member of the band in its long history.

And under the […]

Review Of 2010: December

This is the final part of the Saddleworth News review of all the big events of 2010.

Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg speaks to Saddleworth News editor Richard Jones and his daughter at the Saddleworth Hotel.

Our former MP Phil Woolas conceded defeat in his legal bid to overthrow the decision to strip him of his general election victory, as reported here. That meant a by-election would definitely be held to find his replacement, and the Liberal Democrats sprung […]

Brass Band First For Delph Musician

A musician from Delph has become the first female player to join the famous Brighouse and Rastrick Band. Laura Hirst, who’s 27 and plays the cornet, works at her family’s business, the Albion Farm Shop on Huddersfield Road.

The Brighouse and Rastrick Band has been an all-male preserve since it began in 1881. They’re the current Yorkshire and Great Britain champions.

You can read articles about Laura joining the band from the Examiner here and the Daily Mail here. Sadly, […]

Saddleworth Ready For Whit Friday

It’s arguably the biggest day of the year for Saddleworth. Thousands of local folk and visitors alike will today enjoy this morning’s Whit Walks and this evening’s Whit Friday brass band contests at villages across not only Saddleworth, but also Mossley and the rest of Tameside.

Often called ‘the greatest free show on Earth,’ this year’s band contests have had a more difficult build-up than most. Suggestions from the police earlier this year that certain main […]
