This year’s Whit Friday band contests are set to attract thousands of people to the borough – including musicians from as far afield as Switzerland and Australia.

Rain fails to dampen the ‘greatest free show on earth’

Thousands of people turned out in Saddleworth on Friday for the areas annual ‘Whit Walks’ and famous Whit Friday band contests which have been dubbed the ‘greatest free show on earth’.

Congregations from local churches marched with brass bands into Uppermill from the various villages watched by large crowds of spectators with adults and children walking behind those leading the parades.

Church elders carried the traditional large hand made banners that are unique to each church and Sunday school.

Band club offers amnesty for return of missing instruments

A local band club are making a plea for information to help in the return of some of their missing instruments.

Delph Band Club has offered an amnesty to anyone who returns the instruments – with no questions asked.

Over the last few months a few instruments have gone missing from the club’s band room, most recently a Courtois Soprano Cornet (model 107V with a broken third valve slide).

Thousands of people lined the streets of Saddleworth on Friday for the annual Whit Friday walks despite a wet and cold start to the day.

Lifetime achievement awards Delph Band members

Three members of Delph band received lifetime achievement awards in March at the North West Area Contest at Blackpool’s Winter Gardens.

Delph Band were in the second section and had to play a piece called Chaucer’s Tunes. The band had been working very hard on the piece the weeks before the contest. They were placed 9th out of 16 bands – contesting does not always go your way!
