Local movers and shakers have met to connect and do business over a curry at Blue Tiffin restaurant in Royton. Over 40 people gathered together last Wednesday, a mix of start up business to long established Oldham company’s of varying sizes, local charities and sports clubs.
#OldhamHour is a twitter marketing initiative for local businesses and the Oldham community. Business owners and the public, from Oldham and surrounding areas, gather online on twitter every Monday evening 9-10pm, to talk to each other, ask for help and share news of services and events they’re involved in. Last month the #hour reached over 110,00 people. Many local business, charities, clubs, events have gained from interacting on #Oldhamhour, helped local people find a job, connected
business who are now working with each other and helped sport clubs with sponsorship deals.
#Oldhamhour was started in April 2014 by a handful of local business owners and since then it has mushroomed in popularity. It is primarily run as an interactive session on Monday evenings, however some users prefer to pop by and read information without obviously being present and also pick up on the #oldhamhour during the week.
Organisations attending the curry feast included Whittaker Design, OCL, AFC Oldham, Ryder & Dutton, AC Tyres, Oldham Athletic, Andy Hall, Jude Gidney Photography, Cornerhouse Cakes, Simply Skin, Studio G Photography, All about Oldham, Sports Physio UK, Doing Biz for Yourself, Muz Khan, Kashif Ashraf, Think 4 IT, Live Oldham, Mahdlo, Action Oldham, Dale bathrooms, Saddleworth Magazine, Sensibly Designed Limited, Print and Web Design, KP Life Coach, Darren Robinson Photography, Forty3, Targamar Dog Grooming and Saddleworth News.
Lee Hollinworth of Whittaker Design, one of the founder members and ongoing administrator of #Oldhamhour, told Saddleworth News: ‘It’s all very positive. It covers so much about Oldham and how lots of us are working together for the benefit of each other in the local business community together with Charities, events and therefore our town.’
Jude Gidney of Jude Gidney Photography, another founding member, told Saddleworth News : “It’s great to get Oldham talking. We set the initiative up to help bring together the people and businesses of Oldham, as there was nothing similar nor reaching such a wide audience around. It’s amazing where it’s gone, led mainly by Lee’s enthusiasm and drive.”
