Man remains in critical condition after Denshaw crash

GmpcrestReporter: Stuart Littleford

Police are appealing for witnesses after a man was left with life threatening head injuries after a traffic collision in Saddleworth.

Shortly before 2.40am yesterday, a 24-year-old man was driving a white BMW along Ripponden Road in Denshaw towards the M62 motorway, when he came up to a left hand bend and lost control of the car.

The vehicle collided with the armco safety barriers and hit a stone wall before overturning onto its roof and coming to a rest on the carriageway near to the Rams Head public house.

Members of the public came across the scene of the collision and attempted to help but found the man unconscious and unresponsive. One of them attempted to administer first aid to the man until the emergency services arrived and managed to get him out of the vehicle.

He was taken to Royal Oldham Hospital with serious head injuries which are described as ‘life threatening’ and remains in a critical condition this morning.

Sergeant Mark Thomas, of the GMP Serious Collision Investigation Unit, said: “We are not quite sure what happened that made this young man lose control of the car on the bend but we are keen to find out and would like to speak to anybody with any information.

“I would like to thank those who stopped and attempted to help this man in his time of need and for contacting the emergency services straight away so that he could get out of the car and to hospital as quickly as possible.”

Anybody with information should contact the GMP Serious Collision Investigation Unit on 0161 856 4741 or the independent charity Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555 111.
