Police investigating yesterday’s fatal crash on the A635 Isle of Skye Road are trying to trace the driver of a white van.

Officers believe the driver may be a crucial witness to the tragedy, in which motorcyclist and off-duty policeman Graham Lyne died.

The 47-year-old, from Chadderton, suffered serious head injuries and died at the scene, after his bike collided with a Vauxhall Corsa. The occupants of the Vauxhall weren’t physically injured, but were treated for shock.

The incident happened between Greenfield and Holmfirth, on the Saddleworth side of the district boundary, just after 11 o’clock yesterday morning. The road was closed for much of the rest of the day.

In a statement, Sergeant Paul Higgins from the Road Policing Unit said:We believe Graham was about to overtake the van shortly before his death and we are eager to talk to the driver. They may hold vital information into what happened leading up to the collision.”

He added: “We believe the vehicle was travelling towards Greenfield and I would urge them to phone us as soon as possible.”

Anyone with information is asked to ring the police on 0161 856 8473.
