Holmfirth Arts Festival Begins This Weekend

As our own Saddleworth Festival of the Arts comes to an end this weekend, the two-week Holmfirth Arts Festival begins.

Highlights of the programme include a performance by comedian Josie Long at the Southgate Theatre in Honley next Thursday, and a musical appearance by legendary Barnsley poet Ian McMillan along with his band at the Picturedrome on Saturday 25 June.

Another interesting part of the festival is the This Place project, in which a dozen authors have written new pieces of poetry and prose about different locations in Holmfirth and the Holme Valley. You can listen to them by picking up an MP3 player from the Holmfirth Library on any day of the festival, and you can visit the different places to listen to the writing in the headphones, if you wish.

Meanwhile, the Street Pianos initiative features five pianos placed at different locations by the Holmfirth Fair Traders Co-operative. Anyone can play them, and each has information about a different theme to do with fair trade and sustainable living.

To read more about that, and the co-operative’s first birthday party this coming Sunday, read a Saddleworth News article here.

You can get more details of the whole programme at the festival’s website here or from its Facebook page here. There’s also a more detailed preview of the festival from the Examiner here.

Tickets for all of the events are available from the box office by clicking here.
