As people mark the 70th anniversary of the liberation of the Nazi concentration camp, Auschwitz-Birkenau, Debbie Abrahams, MP for Oldham East and Saddleworth, has praised the work of Saddleworth Peace Group and signed the Holocaust Educational Trust’s Book of Commitment, pledging her commitment to Holocaust Memorial Day, honouring those who were murdered, and paying tribute to the survivors who work to educate young people.
After signing the Book of Commitment Debbie said: “Holocaust Memorial Day is an important opportunity to remember the victims and survivors of the Holocaust and make sure they are not forgotten.
“I was also very pleased to attend Saddleworth Peace Group’s vigil to mark the occasion and I salute their tireless efforts to fight prejudice and promote peace, tolerance and understanding in our community.
“We cannot afford to just hope that something as terrible as the Holocaust couldn’t happen again. In fact all we need to do is remember that, since then, we have had similar events in Cambodia, Bosnia, Rwanda and Darfur; all of which are remembered as part of Holocaust Memorial Day.
“Thanks to Holocaust Memorial Day, and organisations like the Saddleworth Peace Group, we are reminded how vigilant we need to be to avoid allowing anything like this happening again.”
Karen Pollock MBE, Chief Executive of the Holocaust Educational Trust, said: “We are proud that Debbie is supporting Holocaust Memorial Day.
“As we mark the 70th anniversary of the end of the Holocaust and the liberation of the concentration camps in 2015, it is vitally important that we both continue to remember and learn from the appalling events of the Holocaust as well as ensuring that we continue to challenge anti-Semitism and all forms of bigotry.”
