Look in on vulnerable neighbours and relatives Check up on older neighbours and relatives and those with heart or respiratory (breathing) problems to make sure they’re safe and well. Check they’re warm enough, especially at night; and have stocks of food and medicines so they don’t need to go out during very cold weather.

Eat Well

Regular meals will keep your energy levels up, so aim to eat at least one hot meal a day and have plenty of hot drinks. Keep your diet as varied as possible, including your five portions of fruit and veg. Stock up on tinned and frozen foods so you don’t have to go out too often when it’s icy or cold.

3. Keep Well When indoors, try not to sit for more than an hour or so without getting up, stretching your legs and making yourself a warm drink. Have your heating and cooking appliances checked by a Gas Safe registered engineer to make sure they are operating safely. Contact your water and power suppliers to see if you can be on the Priority Services Register, a service for older and disabled people.

Get a free flu jab if you’re eligible (over 65 years; live in a residential or nursing home; or are the main carer for an older or disabled person). Most pharmacies and supermarkets provide a flu jab service for a small charge, if you’re not eligible for a free jab. www.nhs.uk/flu
