There are also three smaller blazes on the surrounding moorland.

The fire is still continuing to burn but Greater Manchester Fire & Rescue Service have told Saddleworth News they are aware of the fire.

In a statement to Saddleworth News GMFRS said: “Crews from Mossley and Oldham fire stations were called to a fire involving a large area of moorland above Dovestone Reservoir, Greenfield, Saddleworth at 5.20pm on Tuesday, March 5.

“Firefighters used beaters to tackle the fire, which involved around two hectares of moorland.

“Crews remained on the scene until dark and officers returned at regular intervals throughout the night to assess the area and ensure there was no risk to property.

“Officers also attended this morning (Wednesday, March 6) after it was reported that there was still signs of  a fire.”

INfo received tonight……..2 “youths” apparently seen running from the area by a walker. Fire is on east side of Chew Valley, South of quarry, 2 fire brigade units in attendance. RSPB leads will be on site tomorrow.

I was somewhat amazed to see remembrance party in the area near the boat storage lighting a paper hot air balloon on Sunday. The ‘Tree for a Life’ van was there as well. At this time of year its asking for trouble.

John Orson: Well said. These paper lanterns are a menace to flora (especially dry moors) and fauna in the countryside and those that send up these ludicrous things should think a bit more about the damage that they can cause.
